Non-conference roundup: 1/29/13

Colby College Mules (3-13-2)       2
UNE Nor'Easters (5-13-1)              2

It was over when..: Nor'eastern goalie  Ian Edwards (G, Jr.) turned aside six shots in overtime to keep the score knotted at two. Shots in favor of the Mules 29-23 for the game.

The Nor'easters led off the scoring when Nick Kolb (F, So.) sniped it past Jordan Nathan (G, So.) 10:42 into the  first period on a power play. After a penalty on UNE, the Nor'easters almost made it 2-0 when Ty Fleurent (F, Sr.) had a short handed breakaway, but his attempt was turned aside by Nathan. Less than a minute later the Mules evened the score, when Nick Trepp (D, Jr.) buried a pass from Ray Zeek  (F, So.) for a power play goal.

The second was a back and forth affair, with both teams getting their chances. About six minutes into the period, the Mules had a 2 on 1 but Ian Edwards (G, Jr.) turned aside Mike Smigelski (F, Sr.) twice. After a tripping call on Chris Kennedy (D, Fr.), UNE's Jared Melman (F, So.) put in a power play goal to make it 2-1 with 9:13 left in the second. Later in the period Zeth  Zielinski (F, So.)  hit the post and then followed it up with a backhand that was stopped by Nathan.  With about five mnutes to go, Edwards stoned Colby leading scorer Nick Lanza (F, Jr.).

Fleurent was charged with a double minor for tripping and unsportsmanlike conduct with 13 seconds to go in the second period, but Colby couldn't capitalize at the beginning of the third. The Mules tried to tie the game the rest of the period and got a chance when UNE's Chris Glover  (D, So.) was called for a cross-checking penalty at 16:43. The Nor'easters killed off Colby's man advantage, culminating with Edwards stopping Ben Chwick (F, Jr.) on a one on none to end the penalty. With the goalie pulled in the final minute, Chwick deeked a defender and beat Edwards with a back hand goal with six seconds left to force overtime.

It was the fourth overtime game and first tie for UNE on the season.; they are now 2-1-1 in games that go to an extram frame. It was the third overtime game and second tie for Colby, who is now 0-1-2 in OT games on the season. As was forecasted in the keys to the game, special teams were the difference, with three of the four goals coming on power plays.

Player of the gameBen Chwick (F, Jr.) for his late game heroics to send it into OT.
