Linkstravaganza: Valentine's Day Edition

Student Papers
The Amherst Student looks at this past weekend's Nemo delayed wins over "bottom-feeders" Conn. College and Tufts, thrusting the Lord Jeffs into a three-way tie for second in the NESCAC.  They also look forward to "the most pivotal regular season weekend of the year" against fellow second placers Williams and Middlebury. Quotes from senior co-captain Brandon Hew (D, Sr.) and coach Jack Arena. Article

The Bowdien Orient profiles Max Fenkell (G, So.), the Saturday half of Bowdoin's goal-tending duo, who is "just trying to take as long as possible to finish college." Fenkell went from prep to school, to division 1 hockey at Colgate, to Canadian juniors before he finally ended up at Bowdoin this season. Fenkell leads the NESCAC in goals against average(GAA) and if the season ended today (written on Feb. 8 but would still be true) would have the best single season save percentage in Bowdoin Polar Bear men's hockey history. Good quotes from Fenkell and coach Terry Meagher. Article

The Tufts Daily   recaps an up and down weekend for the last place Jumbos team, who entered the season with its eyes "set on not only making the NESCAC tournament but on hosting a first−round game for the second straight year."  Quotes from juniors Brian Phillips (G, Jr.) and Kyle Gallegos (F, Jr.). Article

The Middlebury Campus  compares this season's streakiness to last year's Panthers team. Other topics covered include the search for consistent goal-tending, improved play in practice and how the Panthers could end this weekend anywhere from first to fifth in the standings heading to the playoffs. Quotes from Dan Fullam (G, So.) and coach Bill Beaney. Article

The Williams Record  provides a detailed recap of this past weekend's split with Middlebury. Quote from goalie Sean Dougherty (G, So.) Article

Wesleyan Argus   recaps this past Sunday's tie with Bowdoin; written before the Colby game was played.

Joe Concannon Award
As was reported yesterday, six NESCAC players were selected as semifinalists for the Joe Concannon Award, given by the Gridion Club of Greater Boston to the best American-born college hockey player in New England playing at the D-II/II level. Below are links for coverage from the schools for their respective player(s) that were chosen.

Williams Athletics site provides a good article on not just Ephs selection Sean Dougherty (G, So.) but on all the semi-finalists and the award itself.

Bowdoin Athletics article on Polar Bear selections Ollie Koo (D/F, Jr.) and Daniel Weiniger (F,  Sr.)

Colby, Tufts and Wesleyan don't yet have coverage on their respective player's selection; Nick Lanza (F, Jr.), Dylan Plimmer (F, Sr.) and Keith Buehler (F, Jr.).

USCHO Feature: What a difference a day makes for Amherst
In this week's USCHO feature, Tim Costello talks to Amherst coach Jack Arena about the few benefits of Winter Storm Nemo. The Lord Jeffs are a meager 0 1-2 in their last three Saturday games, all after solid Friday wins. So Arena wasn't exactly crestfallen when the games were moved to Sunday/Monday instead of Friday/Saturday because of the weather. "I hope the shift in game schedule due to the blizzard will help our focus, since the second game is a Monday, and not a Saturday. " (they beat Tufts 6-1)

Other topics covered include Arena's desire for less top-heavy production. "What we need now is some new scoring from some of our other regular players not on the top two lines to help share the load"; as well as the 30th year coach having his son Patrick on the team. "I think he(Patrick) realized quickly that he wasn’t going to get any preferential treatment from me or the other coaches, and everything has worked out just fine so far.”
