Conference Roundup 11/16/13

Amherst Lord Jeffs (2-0-0)              3
Hamilton Continentals (0-2-0)            1

It was over when...: Conor Brown (F, '16) put in his second goal of the night and his second empty-netter in as many days to seal the game for Amherst. Less than a minute earlier, with a Lord Jeff in the box and the goalie pulled for an empty net 6-4, Kenny Matheson (F, '16) ripped home a one-timer from fellow sophomore Marko Brelih (D, '16) to cut the score to 2-1.

The Continentals troubles on the power play continue as the Conts go 1/5 on the man advantage for the night and  2/12 for the weekend. In the first four power plays last night, Hamilton only got off three shots and almost let up a short handed goal when Lord Jeffs freshman forward Chris Roll (F, '17) hit the post. Amherst was 1/4 on the power play on the night and 3/10 in the weekend sweep of Hamilton.

In the first period, after the Continentals successfully killed off a Pittsburgh native Jesse Root Tyler Lovejoy (D, '16) penalty, Lovejoy got called for a boarding call just six seconds out of the box that left Mike Cashman (F, '15) sprawled out on the ice. Cashman, who was limited to just 14 games last year because of injuries, was able to get up and continue. On the subsequent power play, Mike Rowbotham (F, '15) put in his second goal of the year to put the Jeffs up 1-0.  Brown would add a goal in the second to make it 2-0.

Only 31 shots on net (17-Amherst, 14-Hamilton) with Dave Cunningham (G, '16) making 13 saves in victory and Joe Quattrocchi (G, '14) stopping 12 in defeat. This was Hamilton's annual "Citrus Bowl" AKA the best attended game of the year by the Hamilton faithful. The Conts' sophomore webcast announcers did their best to hype the large crowd size, but the attendance on the box score and the lack of crowd noise on the webcast told a different story.

Player of the game: Conor Brown (F, '16) Sure he has had two empty netters in two days, but he also scored the game winner earlier in the night and ends the weekend with five points (4-1-5).

Colby Mules (0-0-1) 1
Williams Ephs (0-0-1) 1

It was over when...: The buzzer sounded in Williamstown with a hard fought tie for both teams. The Anderson/Mistretta/Kitto line looked strong, producing the only Ephs goal of the evening (Anderson) to take a 1-0 lead in the second and producing opportunities throughout the evening. Mistretta looked like he has recovered from the concussions that nearly ended his career last year and Kitto has bounced back from injuries that limited him to ten games last year.

It was freshman night in Williamstown with 14 neophyte NESCACers (plus Middlebury transfer Alex Walsh for Colby) seeing playing time (7 for Colby, 7 for Williams). The Ephs Tyler Young was part of several scoring chances but also took two penalties in the first period.

While the Mules rookies were solid, it was vets that got them back in this game. With about five minutes to play Ray Zeek (F, '15,) took a pass from Ben Chwick (F, 14) behind the net and stuffed it home (Nick Lanza (F. '14) also got an assist). The Ephs write up credits the goal to Chwick.

Player of the Game: Sam Parker (G, '15) Made 41 saves and even if the Ephs shot counting is dubious, played very well and made some key saves to show why he earned the starting job down the stretch last season. The Cambridge, MA native has now given up two or fewer goals in the last five outings, all conference games.
