It was over when...: the clock ran out in OT with the score tied 2-2. The two teams tied their first game last year also.
First period: A fairly evenly played period with both teams getting a good number of shots. The Polar Bears got the only marker as Freshman Kendall Culberston (F, '17) nets his first careeer goal. The first year player from California had been on twitter in the afternoon talking up his first game. Sophomore Chris Fenwick (F, '16) earned the goal though. Fenwick is one of three Fenwicks in NESCAC; (brother Andrew is a junior at Amherst while the youngest Scott is at Colby). Fenwick broke up a play inside his defensive blue line as a Middlebury power play expired and rushed up the left side for a good shot. Culberston stuffed the rebound past the Panther’s junior goaltender, Mike Peters (G, '15).
Second period: Middlebury got even and pulled ahead. Nice goal by Derek Pimentel (F, '15) from Max Greenwald (D, '16) to tie the game. Connor Frick (D, '15), on the power play, put the Panthers on top 2-1 with 5:14 to go. The announcer from NSN called the Sophomore blue-liner from Webster Groves,Missouri’s name a lot in this game.
Freshmen got plenty of time for Bowdoin in this game and it showed during the second period. Ryan Collier (F/D, '15) and Ryan Carney (D, '13) joined veteran defenseman and Captain Jay Livermore (D, '14) as the only experienced defensemen. Senior Carney saw limited time last year due to injuries. First years Mitch Barrington (D, '17, Brendan Conroy (D, '17), Joseph Lace (D, '17) and John-Alexander "Jay" Kourkoulis (D, '17) all saw time on the blue line. Neither sophomore Gabe Renaud (D, '16), who matured nicely while seeing a lot of time action last year, nor fellow sophomore Blake Cormier (D, '16) dressed.
Late in the second Bowdoin’s Max Fenkell (G, '15) came up big on a three-on-one. Sophomore Matt Silcoff (F, '16) carried the puck down the right side and slid off a nice pass off to Louis Belisle (F, '14) leaving him the whole left side of the net. Fenkell got a piece of it and the puck went wide.
Third Period: Middlebury went up on a five-on-three power play only to draw two penalties of their own during the PP so that after playing three-on-three for a brief period Bowdoin went on the power play. Neither team capitalized during a fractured three minutes. But with a one-goal lead and the third period waning it was a blown opportunity for the Panthers.
With 7:16 to play, Junior John McGinnis (F, '15) found Peters' five-hole off a pass from Livermore. Middlebury pressured getting several chances. Pimentel was robbed with about four minutes remaining by Fenkell; the Bowdoin goalie poke checked the puck off the wide open junior from Quebec’s stick just at the right side of the net. With two and a half to go Livermore dove across the crease to break up a great Middlebury chance.
OT: The first part of the overtime was all Middlebury. The Panthers had several chances. Belisle put a shot on Fenkell and Silcoff had the right side of the net wide open, but put the rebound wide. With less than a minute to go, Fenwick slid to block a shot from the point.
As OT wound down Bowdoin had its best chances. Senior Co-Captain Harry Matteson (F, '14) broke in on Peters only to have Peters come out to dislodge the puck. With 18 seconds on the clock Bowdoin’s junior Danny Palumbo (F, '15) won a faceoff cleanly and Livermore’s one-timer called for one last big save from Peters.
Player(s) of the game: the goaltenders. Bowdoin’s Max Fenkell (G, '16) gets he nod over the Panthers’ Mike Peters (G, '15). Fenkell made 34 saves to Peters 22 and was tested more often, particularly in the OT.
Box Score: Bowdoin 2/Middlebury 2 OT
