NESCAC Playoff Scenario
For today's results and recaps, scroll down or see our Live Scoreboard here
We have just one game left in the NESCAC regular season, a Nemo postponed makeup between Bowdoin and Trinity on Monday night at the Brooks School in North Andover, MA. Heading into that matchup we know who the eight playoff teams are, but we only have two match-ups set for the first round (Quarterfinals) of the NESCAC men's ice hockey playoffs next Saturday, February 23rd. Here's what we know:
Eliminated teams:
9. Conn College
10. Tufts
Known matchups (higher seed hosts lower seed):
1. Bowdoin vs 8. Hamilton
2. Williams vs 7. Colby
Still to be determined:
3. Amherst/Middlebury/Trinity vs. 6. Wesleyan
4. Amherst/Middlebury vs 5. Amherst/Middlebury/Trinity
So the final two playoff games, both who hosts them and where they are to be held, come down to a game at a neutral site game between Trinity, fighting for a NESCAC playoff home game, and Bowdoin, fighting for NCAA tournament seeding/Pool C qualifying rank. Here's what happens in each scenario:
If Trinity beats Bowdoin:
Trinity wins the three seed by virtue of having more points (25) than Amherst/Middlebury (24). Amherst, by virtue of sweeping the season series with Middlebury, gets the four seed and Middlebury the 5. So we would have:
3. Trinity vs. 6. Wesleyan
4. Amherst vs 5. Middlebury
If Trinity loses to Bowdoin:
Amherst takes the tiebreaker over Middlebury, who gets fourth. Trinity finishes in fifth with 23 points. So we would have:
3. Amherst vs 6. Wesleyan
4. Middlebury vs 5. Trinity
If Trinity ties Bowdoin:
There is a threeway tie for third (24 points) and we'll have some fun with the tie-breaking rules. Based on said rules, Trinity wins the three seed, because they have a (3-1) record in head to heads between the three teams. Amherst is (2-2) and Middlebury is (1-3). In this scenario, Amherst gets the four seed and hosts fifth seed Middlebury. So we would have:
3. Trinity vs. 6. Wesleyan
4. Amherst vs 5. Middlebury
