FINAL: Middlebury 7 Colby 1

Colby Mules (0-1-1)                 1
Middlebury Panthers (1-0-1)   7

It was over when...: Middlebury scored three second period goals to blow open a game that was 2-1 after one period of play. Middlebury outshot Colby 16-2 in the period and 41-13 for the game. Twelve different Panthers had a goal or an assist on the afternoon.

Middlebury opened up the scoring 2:46 into the game when a Ben Wiggins (D, '14) shot from the point was deflected by Jake Charles (F, '16) to Derek Pimentel (F, '15), who put it in. Pimentel would score his second goal of the evening in what would prove to be the game winner six minutes later. Colby cut the lead in half with six minutes remaining in the first, on a bang bang play after a faceoff that resulted in Ray Zeek (F, '15) putting in a Nick Lanza (F, '14) pass. Lanza's two goals on the weekend were the only Mules tallies.

The second period, which put the game out of reach, saw the Mules taking six penalties and the Panthers capitalizing on two of the power plays. A second after a 5-3 became a 5-4, Ron Fishman (D, '16) fed Evan Neugold (F, '16) for a one-timer goal. Charles, who had two assists in the first period, scored his first collegiate goal at the 8:41 mark on a shot from the low slot (assist to Pimentel). 2012-13 Panthers leading goal scorer Louis Belisle (F, '14) netted his first goal of the season on the power play with 36 ticks on the clock to complete the second period route.

The Mules replaced starting goaltender Sam Parker (G, '16) with freshman Ben Csiernik (G, '17) at the start of the third period. Parker had given up two goals or less in his last five starts (dating back to last year) before giving up five goals on 27 shots this afternoon. In Csiernik's first collegiate action he gave up two goals on twelve shots.

Middlebury extended its lead to 6-1 on the power play seven minutes into the final frame. Freshman Cameron Romoff (D, '17) took a shot from the point, which Charles tipped in for his second goal and Romoff's first collegiate point. Michael Longo (F, '17) capped off the scoring with his first goal of the season.

The seldom tested Mike Peters (G, '15) made his second start in a row and made 12 saves in the win. The potent Panthers power play ended up 3/7 (.427) on the day and 4/12 (.333) on the weekend. Bill Beaney's fast skating club showed off their considerable skills and at times looked in midseason form.

Nine freshman saw playing time for the Mules, while Middlebury transfer Alex Walsh (D, '16) did not dress in his return to Vermont. Only two freshman dressed for Middlebury, but both Romoff and Mike Najjar (F, '17) saw significant playing time.

Player of the game: Jake Charles (F, '16) Had the first two goals of his career and added two assists for a four point afternoon (2-2-4). After dressing in only nine games his freshman year and amassing only one assist, the 6'2" 182 lb. forward from British Columbia has five points (2-3-5) in two games.
