Conference Roundup: 1/12/13

Wesleyan (7-6-1; 3-4-1NESCAC): 3
Colby (3-11-1; 1-8-1 NESCAC): 1

It was over when... : Jaren Taenaka (F, Fr.) scored his fourth goal of the year to give the Cardinals a 3-1 lead with about five minutes to go in the third. Player to watch Nick Lanza (F, Jr.) gave the Mules an early 1-0 lead in the first on his team leading ninth goal,  and the lead stood until three 3rd period goals by Wesleyan.  30-25 shots in favor of Cardinals.

The Cardinals sweeps their Maine adventure and climb up to seventh in NESCAC standings after starting the weekend tied for ninth. Colby remains in last.

Player of the game : Nick Craven (F, Sr.) scored his 10th goal of the year to break the 1-1 tie in the third. It is the first time he has reached double digit goals in his collegiate career.

Tufts (4-7-1; 1-6-1 NESCAC): 1
Hamilton (4-6-3; 3-5-2 NESCAC): 3

It was over when... Dom Jancaterino (F/D, Jr.) put in an empty netter to put the Continentals up 3-1 for his sixth goal of the year. Anthony Ruberto (F, Sr.) started off the scoring in the first with his sixth goal of the year as well(tied for team lead), and Stewart Bell (F, Fr.) pulled the Jumbos even in the second. Hamilton defender Scott Vazquez (D, Fr.) scored his first collegiate goal to give Hamilton the lead with four minutes to go. Hamilton outshoots Tufts 32-27 but their power play woes continue with an 0-8 outing.

Hamilton holds on to sixth place with 8 points, holding off the surging Wesleyan Cardinals who now have 7 points. Tufts now joins Colby in the cellar.

Player of the game: Scott Vazquez (D, Fr.) for his first collegiate goal to break the 1-1 tie in the third.

Conn.College (3-6-3; 1-4-3 NESCAC): 2
Amherst (9-4-2; 6-3-1 NESCAC): 2

It was over when...: The Buzzer sounded and the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Amherst jumped out to an early first period lead on goals by player to watch Mike Rowbotham (F, So.) and Dylan Trumble ( F, Sr.). Conn. College tied the game in the second with two short handed goals by Keith Veronesi (F, Jr) and Zach Jones (F, So.)  on the same power play.  Shots were low for both but in favor of Amherst 23-18.

Amherst now tied with Williams for second with 13 points, but the Lord Jeffs have played two more conference games than the Ephs. Conn. College is two points ahead of Tufts and Colby for the final playoff spot, and they have played two less conference games than the Jumbos and Mules.

Players of the game: Keith Veronesi (F, Jr) and Zach Jones (F, So.) for their two short handed goals within 40 seconds of each other for the tie.

Trinity (6-4-3; 3-2-3 NESCAC): 2
Bowdoin (13-1-1; 8-1-1 NESCAC): 5

It was over when...: Ollie Koo (D/F, Jr.) scored his second goal of the game to put Bowdoin up 4-2 in the third. Trinity struck first on a goal by Chris Menard  (F, Sr.) in the first, and pulled it to 3-2 on a goal by player to watch Jordan So (F, Sr.) after Bowdoin scored three unanswered goals in the second.

Player to watch Max Fenkell (G, So.) got the Polar Bears back on track defensively, giving up only two goals on 27 shots. Trinity star goaltender Ben Coulhardt (G, Jr.) was removed midway through the second after an argument with the ref (hat tip to Benet Pols for the info) having given up 3 goals on 22 shots. Bowdoin outshot Trinity 36-27.

Despite their loss on Friday, Bowdoin still has a solid 4 point lead over Amherst and Williams for the top spot in the NESCAC. Trinity, once the darlings of the league and nationally ranked, escape Maine with only one point for the weekend and are in fifth in the standings.

Player of the game: Ollie Koo (D/F, Jr.) for his two goals, including a key insurance goal in the third period to ice the game.

  1. Actually Coulhardt got a misconduct mid way through the second period after a penalty called on Trinity. Spazzed out and cursed the ref up and down for a couple of minutes.
