Preseason Predictions
2011-12 was a hard act to follow for Amherst. The Lord Jeffs went (24-4-1; 17-1-0), winning the regular season NESCAC crown, winning the conference tournament, and making it all the way to the Frozen Four before losing to Oswego, 2-1, in OT. Still, USCHO and the WordPress Blog predicted success for Amherst this year, placing the Lord Jeff at second and first, respectively, in the league. Concerns included replacing reigning NESCAC and USCHO D-III Player of the Year Jonathan La Rose (G, '12) in net. Strengths included returning firepower, as eight of the top ten leading scorers came back for the 2012-13 season. National writers gave them love as well, ranking Amherst sixth in the first USCHO D-III National Poll, before the Lord Jeffs had even played a game.
Season Review
The Lord Jeffs opened up the 2012-13 campaign with back-to-back 1-0 victories over travel partner Hamilton. They would then win (Westfield State), tie (Gustavus Adolphus) and lose (Utica) three non conference games. They would then win at Wesleyan, before losing two straight one goal games at Trinity and Williams, only to right the ship with a win at Middlebury. Amherst would fall to 12th in the USCHO Poll after the Trinity loss, the lowest they would fall for the season.
The Lord Jeffs closed out 2012 at the Cardinal Classic, which they won, beating Elmira in the first round and winning the finals, 3-2, over the host (and frequent NESCAC foe) Cardinals of Plattsburgh. After dropping a tough one goal game against sixth ranked Bowdoin in their first game of 2013, Amherst would go on a five game unbeaten streak(4-0-1), before losing a home game, 7-4, to Trinity. The win swept the season series for the Bantams.
In the Lord Jeffs final six games, they went (4-1-1), a stretch that started with a big win at Bowdoin followed by a disappointing 3-3 tie at Colby in which the Jeffs were leading 3-0 in the third period. After taking care of Conn College and Tufts on the road, Amherst returned home for final games with Williams and Middlebury, the two teams they were tied with in a threeway for second.
Amherst lost a 4-2 game on Friday against the Ephs despite holding a 37-16 shot advantage. On Saturday, they won a back and forth game, 5-3, over Middlebury. The win swept the season series with the Panthers, earning the Lord Jeffs the fourth spot and Middlebury the fifth spot when they tied in the standings with 24 points.
The Lord Jeffs will host the Panthers this Saturday, February 23rd at 1PM in the Quarterfinals of the NESCAC playoffs.
High Point
The win over Wesleyan capping off a (4-0-1) stretch. They left that game with a match-up at home against Trinity that could have put them in sole possession of third place, just two points behind Williams and four points behind Bowdoin with six games to play, including one each against the Ephs and Polar Bears.
Low Point
The subsequent 7-4 loss to Trinity. The Bantams swept the season series and dropped the Lord Jeffs to fifth. They would have to fight their way back to earn a home playoff game.
MVP
Johnny Van Siclen (F, Sr.) The Name with the Game. Van Siclen led the Lord Jeffs in goals and points (14-11-25), including scoring four more goals than the next nearest Jeff and scoring five game winning goals, three more than the next highest team member.
