Linkstravaganza 2/6/13

Bowdoin's MVP
This heart-warming story comes from WCSH-6, the NBC affiliate in Portland, ME. The Bowdoin men's hockey team has a new recruit, ten year old Lucien Hodell. The Polar Bears got in touch with Lucien via Team Impact , a non-profit that matches college teams with children facing adverse or life-threatening conditions. Holdell, adopted from Haiti when he was 21 months old, suffers from cerebral palsy.

Below is the video segment, including game action from this past Saturday's match-up with Hamilton, as well as interviews with Lucien, Coach Meagher and players. Lucien, dressed in a #28 jersey Tim McGarry  (D, Sr.) gave him, clearly loves watching the Polar Bears play his favorite sport (because it is "physical" as he says), and the coaches and players probably get even more out of it than he does from having him around.

Student Papers
Here is the Amherst Student piece on Amherst's 1-0-1 weekend in Maine.  Lots of good quotes from Lord Jeffs players about their big win against Bowdoin and their concerning trend of "lackluster" Saturday performances.

Article from the Wesleyan Argus on the Cardinals win-less weekend and how it affected their chances at a home playoff game.

The Williams Record catches up on the Ephs past few weeks, and points out that despite their 0-1-1 weekend, the team clinched a playoff spot.

The Bowdoin Orient recaps the Polar Bears past weekend split with Amherst and Hamilton, including quotes from Daniel Weiniger (F, Sr.) about keeping their eye on the bigger picture and looking forward to exacting revenge against Wesleyan.

The Trinity Tripod gives their recap of the Bantams weekend, including how eight time national champion and "underdog" Middlebury "shocked" Trinity on Saturday.

The Tufts Daily gives us this solid piece , including quotes from players, on their 0fer in the home and home with Conn. College and the Jumbos year long struggles in the third period.

Miscellaneous
An Article from the Bowdoin Daily Sun retraces how Bowdoin adopted the Polar Bear as its mascot specifically, and the history of colleges adopting mascots and colors in general. Good companion for our NESCAC mascot primer

Our jersey poll and primer was mentioned in today's Uni-Watch ticker: "If you’ve been dying to vote on who has the best and worst hockey jerseys in a tiny D3 conference, today’s your lucky day" People in the comments section then go on to defend the NESCAC, saying that it may be "tiny" in terms of the student population size of the member schools, but its impact in Division III hockey is anything but.
