Williams 1
Bowdoin 2FINAL Live Stats/Feed
Pre-game: Looks like Fenkell will get the start in net. This is a must win for both teams, as an at large bid seems next to impossible with Norwich losing last night in their conference tournament. For observers not familiar with the Ephs, Dougherty wears #31 on their road jerseys. Yesterday he wore his home jersey #41.
Brian Mcnamara, Mike Broft, Nick Anderson, Craig Kitto and Eric Rubino get the start for Williams. Dougherty in net.
Tim McGarry, Gabrien Renaud, Kyle Lockwood, Rob Toczylowski and Rob MacGregor start for Bowdoin. Max Fenkell in net.
1st Period: Crowd not that into it, but an announcement of the Bowdoin women's score gets a rouse from The Sid fanbase about five minutes in. Bowdoin goes on the first power play of the game on a holding call on the Ephs Mark Lyons.Bowdoin scores on the power play at 11:26 in. Ollie Koo kept a puck in the offensive zone that nearly trickled past the blue line. He then shuffled it over to John Mcginnis who passed across the net to Colin Downey who put it home.
Kyle Lockwood almost makes it 2-0 on a series of wrap arounds, but Dougherty shows he takes yoga(I'm guessing) with a nice split save with about four remaining. As announcers point out, Bowdoin shot count is high, but Williams defensive discipline has kept most of those from the outside.
As they did yesterday, the Polar Bears take a 2-0 lead in the final minute of the opening frame. After the Ephs failed to clear a puck from the defensive zone, Ollie Koo got it over to Hary Mattheson who followed up an initial save by Dougherty and stuffed it home with 4.9 seconds remaining. Shots in favor of Bowdoin 18-9.
2nd Period: Things get chippy in the second period. Ephs standout sophomore Craig Kitto, who missed the majority of the season, leaves the ice holding his wrist in obvious pain after he had a shot blocked by a Bowdoin defender (but later returns). Danny Palumbo took a huge hit and then John Wickman gets called for a cross-checking call at 2:00. Polar Bears can't find the PP flow and it remains 2-0.
Polar Bears and Ephs trade a pair of cross checking calls on guys with two capitals in their name;Tim McGarry and Alex DeBaere, but neither team can find the net. Kitto returns to play and gets yet another CC call to put Bowdoin on their fourth power play of the afternoon at 11:20. 1:05 into that PP Bowdoin gets back in on the penalty act with an interference call from Ollie Koo. Neither team scores on the 4-4 or man advantage.
After Fenkell stops a slapshot, a mini scrum ensues in front of the net after the whistle with 4:15 remaining. Bowdoin comes out of the flareup with a power play on a Nick Anderson slashing call. After Fenkell covered up a short-handed try for the Ephs, things again got chippy, and Eric Rubino gets a call for hitting after the whistle to put Bowdoin on the 5-3 for 37 seconds. The Ephs kill the 5-3 and subsequent 5-4 and the period ends with seven penalties (5 on Williams 2 on Bowdoin) and no goals. Shots in favor of 30-15.
3rd Period: Huge ovation from the Polar Bear faithful as Bowdoin takes the ice for the third to the theme from "Requiem for a Dream. Ephs get on the board 1:14 into the period, when Evan Dugdale tips a Mark Lyons slapshot that gets past Fenkell. Both goalies playing well, athletic save by Fenkell half way through the period and Dougherty with a series of saves a minute later to keep it at 2-1.
The crowd gets even more amped when news of the Bowdoin women winning the NESCAC crown is announced with about 9 minutes to play. Williams goes on their second power play of the day with 7:30 remaining on a holding call against Rob Macgregor. Bowdoin kills the penalty, including a pair of glove saves from Fenkell at the end of the penalty to earn a "Fenk-ell" chant from a packed Sid.
With about 3:30 minutes left the lamp lit but it was called off as Rob MacGregor had slapped the puck in with his hand. With 2:30 left a "Let's Go Bowdoin" chant breaks out but abruptly ends, as all the chants have this weekend. The Ephs try to pull Dougherty but aren't able to do so until 15 secodns left because Bowdoin keeps it in the Williams zone.
Bowdoin wins first official NESCAC men's hockey championship.
