Colby announces 13 incoming recruits

Colby's Ben Chwick ('16) is getting 13 new teammates
Colby announced their thirteen incoming recruits for the 2013-14 men's hockey season today, over two months before NESCAC rosters are official on November 1.
"The 12 members of the Class of 2017 are forwards DevinAlbert (Reading, Mass.), Kevin Doherty (Wakefield, Mass.), Scott Fenwick(Quispamsis, N.B.), EJ Rauseo (Methuen, Mass.), Colin Reilly (Pelham, N.Y.),Brandon Willett (Toronto, Ont.), Michaelvan Siclen (Carlisle, Mass.), defensemen Jack Burton (Reiserstown, Md.), KaiFrankville (La Jolla, Calif.), Sam Hudziak (Charlotte, Vt.), and Geoff Sullivan(Topsfield, Mass.), along with goaltender Ben Csiernik (Hamilton, Ont.).
Colby hockey will also add one to the Class of 2016 in defenseman Alex Walsh (Basking Ridge, N.J.)."
The announcement gives background on each player, including Colby head coach Blaise MacDonald's take on each of the thirteen man class. According to the WordPress Blog, which correctly identified all thirteen names, the new Mules are the second largest 'Cac recruiting class, behind only Trinity, who has 14 incoming players.

This was the first full recruiting cycle MacDonald has had since being hired in June of 2012. Prior to coming to Waterville, the former head coach of Division I Niagara (1996-2001) and UMass-Lowell (2001-11) spent a year as an assistant at UMass-Amherst in 2011-12.

But this isn't just about the bench boss. Much of the recruiting process comes from assistant coaches hitting the recruiting trail, and hitting it hard. If you follow Colby assistant coach Chris Hall on twitter, you know the man has an indefatigable recruiting ethic.

Some of the names coming to Alfond Arena should be familiar to NESCAC fans. The lone transfer on the list, Alex Walsh comes to Colby from 'Cac rival Middlebury, where the defenseman scored two goals in 24 games in his freshman campaign of 2011-12.

Scott Fenwick joins his brothers Andrew (Amherst '15) and Chris (Bowdoin '16) in the proud tradition of NESCAC hockey. But we shouldn't be surprised that the Fenwick family produced a trio of smart, Division III hockey players.  Before venturing off to their 'Cac school of choice, all three brothers went to Northwood School in Lake Placid, New York, home of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" and the host of five of the last six NCAA Division III men's hockey championships. In addition, "Fenwick" is an advanced hockey metric used by proponents of a hockey version of sabermetrics.

Mike Van Siclen just misses playing against his brother, Johnny, who recently graduated from Amherst. Johnny Van Siclen, who we dubbed "The Name with the Game", was second team ALL-NESCAC in his senior season and our choice for 2012-13 Lord Jeffs team MVP after leading Amherst in scoring (14-12-26), including five game winning goals, three more than any of his teammates.

The depth and size of the recruiting class should help MacDonald and co.'s climb up the conference ladder. After finishing last in the NESCAC and missing the eight team playoffs in 2011-12, the Mules sat in the tenth and final spot in the league with a 1-10-1 record at the beginning of February 2013. But then Colby had a furious 4-1-1 conclusion to conference play to claim the seventh seed in the 2013 'Cac playoffs. There, they lost a hard-fought 2-1 match with second seed Williams in the quarterfinals.

The NESCAC season doesn't start for another 80 days and team activities can't start until November 1st. Until then, the thirteen 'Cac hockey neophytes will get acclimated with the rigors of Colby academics, morning lifts and captain's practices.
