Nick Offerman's a Mo' Bro, are you? |
I was initially a bit skeptical of Movember. For starters, I am partial to a full beard, as I have had such a facial hair configuration for most of the past six years since abandoning the misbegotten goatee (which a family member once said looked like hair from... how shall we say...another part of the body ) of my college years. I'm also generally skeptical of charity events that seem more about the gimmick than actually doing good in the world.
But then I found out that several NESCAC hockey teams participate in Movember and it began to pique my interest. More importantly, the Movember Foundation seems to be a rather worthy cause, having been named one of the Top 100 NGOs in the world by The Global Journal in 2012. The charity hasn't been rated by Charity Navigator yet, as it hasn't filed enough years of 990s to the IRS, but I'm hopeful it will get a solid rating once it does.
So a chance to do some good in the world, explore new facial hair, and foster community bonding in the NESCAC hockey community? Count me in as a Mo' Bro. I'm going to donate, then shave my beard and grow a mustache throughout the month. If you are a man, I encourage you to do the same. If you are a woman, I encourage you to encourage men to participate in the event. Maybe we can even have a best 'stache in the 'Cac poll at the end of the month.
And whatever your gender, remember to donate to the cause. Below find links to the team pages for the NESCAC hockey teams participating in the event, where you can donate. If your team page is missing from the list, send us an email (hockeynescac@gmail.com) with the link and we will put it up.
