Tim Costello wrote about the Wesleyan freshman in his first weekly NESCAC column for USCHO of the year. Good quotes from Cardinals coach Chris Potter, including insight into his change of approach from last year, when he kept the same people on special teams.
"This year, I decided that we were jsut going to roll players out in specialty situations and find out what people can do in those situations. Obviously, we didn't plan on having to kill major penalties, but being down players as a result of the penalties really mean everyone stepping up and contributing to getting the job done."He is referring to the two game misconducts from the weekend, something the Cardinals didn't have one of all last season. Potter chimes in on his frosh, including NESCAC Player of the week Elliot Vorell ("It will be exciting to see where he continues to improve at the college level and be a key offensive player for us this season"), James Kline ("...was a key contributor each and every shift and was a big part of our success on the penalty kill all weekend") and goalie Dawson Sprigings ("...it was good to be able to split the load last weekend and see solid performances from both goaltenders and our defensive core overall.").
As for the Saturday/Sunday schedule this week, instead of the more common Friday/Saturday affairs? Potter likes the extra day of week for pratice/rest and the fact that guys can heal a bit longer before the last NESCAC games of 2013 for the Cards. Perhaps he is thinking specifically of Keith Buehler, who sat out last Saturday's game with a groin injury.

The Amherst Student recaps the Lord Jeffs opening weekend sweep of travel partner Hamilton. Some homerism, as to be expected, with the Conts' Murden scoring a "lucky" goal and Amherst's Kevin Ryder being called for a "phanton" interference call, though one of the Continentals goals was scored on an "admittedly" excellent pass. Includes the quote from Amherst coach Jack Arena that his team played well..."considering it was the first weekend."

Good piece from The Middlebury Campus on the Panthers strong opening weekend tie with Bowdoin and rout of Colby. Includes quotes from assistant coach Jamie McKenna and Panthers senior Ben Wiggins. McKenna corroborates what anyone watching the NSN broadcasts saw, "We are definitely faster now than we were last year-we outskated both teams this weekend and moved the puck very well." He also said, of a span of four penalties in two minutes on Sunday, that they were "told to expect a lot more calls this year."
The data doesn't back up this assertion, at least in the very small sample size of opening weekend. A total of 128 penalties were called in ten NESCAC games this past weekend, while 134 were called opening weekend 2012-13.

The Tufts Daily has a nice, long article on Tufts' two one-goal losses against Wesleyan and Trinity that goes through the team line-by-line and includes quotes from Jumbos skaters. The third line has been the most impressive of the forwards (Luke Griffin, Keith Campbell, George Pantazopoulos) with Pantazopoulos leading the team in goals after the first weekend. Tufts players claim they approached their off-season workouts differently this year after finishing in last place and that they are motivated, not frustrated as they would have been last year, by the late losses this season. Time will tell.
