Bowdoin 3
Colby 1
FINAL Box Score Bowdoin Recap Colby Recap
1st Period: A capacity crowd for the 201st meeting of Bowdoin/Colby men's ice hockey. Max Fenkell in net for Bowdoin, Sammy Parker for Colby. Bowdoin sophomore defenseman Gabe Renaud gets his first action of the season. Didn't see the webcast, but I hear it was very nice. Benet will have more from the scene live inside Alfond Rink later this week.
Ollie Koo won't go pointless for three games. Koo scores on an assist from Colin Downey to put the Polar Bears up 1-0 as the Polar Bears dominate the first five minutes. After Harry Matheson hits the post with eight to go, teammate Jay Livermore goes top shelf on the power play to put Bowdoin up 2-0. Shots on goal for Bowdoin 15-9.
2nd Period: Mules freshman blue-liner Geoff Sullivan will remember his first collegiate goal, as it cuts the score to 2-1 in a big rivalry game. Later in the period, Colby's Ben Chwick has an excellent chance on the power play, but ends up whiffing. Colby cuts the shots on goal deficit down a bit but still shots in favor of Bowdoin 25-18.
3rd Period: The Mules own the period, outshooting the Polar Bears 13-8, but the only goal goes to Bowdoin, and it is a controversial one at that. Colby fans do not feel Matheson's goal at 14:28 is legit and they respond by throwing garbage on the ice. Not a lot of penalties in this one, as Bowdoin goes 1/1 and Colby goes 0/2. Fenkell makes 30 saves in the win, Parker makes 30 saves in the loss.
Williams 5
Conn College 2
FINAL Box Score Williams Recap Conn College Recap
1st Period: Sean Dougherty in net for Williams and Mike Petchnoka makes his second straight Friday start for the Camels. Peter Mistretta out again for the Ephs. It's been a year of uniform turnover in the NESCAC and the Ephs show off their new purple road uniforms.
Special teams drive the first period with a total of seven penalties and three goals, all on the power play. Ephs senior Matt Doyle leads off the scoring on a PP goal at 5:56 with assists from freshman forwards Sam Gray and George Hunkele. Camels leading scorer JC Cangelosi ties it up on a 5-3 goal at 9:26 (assists to defenseman Mike Doyle and rookie Greg Liautaud). The Ephs counter as co-captain Paul Steinig scores on a Craig Kitto assist.
2nd Period: No scoring, but two Conn College power plays and a Camels shots advantage of 11-5. As for the webcast, same two man setup in the booth and low angle camera. The kids are homers, but there are certainly worse broadcasts in the NESCAC.
3rd Period: Things unravel for the Camels, despite outshooting the Ephs 11-9 in the period. First, freshman defenseman James McNamara knocks in his second goal of his young career after a defensive breakdown in the Camels zone to make it 3-1 at 13:18. Three minutes later, the Camels take three simultaneous penalties, including a holding call on the goalie, and the Ephs capitalize on their second 5-3 of the game when Frankie Mork scores his first collegiate goal, yet another assist for Kitto. Ephs get some insurance later on when Hunkele gets his second goal of his career, assists to Mork and Steinig.
With 15 seconds remaining, the refs call a penalty shot for CC's Tim DiPretoro and he puts it in to improve the cosmetics of the score. The Camels actually outshoot the Ephs but take eight penalties, and the Ephs go 3/7 on the PP for the evening. Williams' highly touted recruiting class has been the real deal with six of the eleven Ephs goals on the season coming from frosh.
Middlebury 4
Tufts 3
FINAL Box Score Middlebury Recap Tufts Recap
1st Period: Freshman Kellenberger in net for Tufts in their home opener and Middlebury's Mike Peters makes his third straight start for the Panthers. The Jumbos new webcast, in terms of picture quality, is light years ahead of last season's and includes a handy but unobtrusive scoreboard at the top of the screen. The camera work still needs some tweaking as the cameraman was slow to adjust at times and the puck was off screen. No announcer yet, but the Middlebury radio call was available.
Middlebury opens up the scoring when sophomore Max Greenwald makes a beautiful touchdown pass to fellow sophomore Evan Neugold, who beats Kellenberger high glove side at 4:52. The Panthers open up a 3-0 lead with a five-on-three Robbie Donahoe power play goal and freshman Mike Najjar's first collegiate tally. The Jumbos answer back with a power play goal from Tyler Voigt, assist to Kyle Gallegos. Seven total penalties in the first, five to Tufts and two to Middlebury. It's hard to pull off an upset against a superior skilled team when you are often in the box.
2nd Period: Tufts gives Middlebury another five-on-three and shocker, they capitalize. After Donahoe plays hot potato with Louis Belisle at the point for a while, Belisle rips a one timer. With all the space from the 5-3, the Panthers get several cracks at rebounds and freshman Cam Romoff puts in his first career goal.
3rd Period: Tufts, down 4-1, is for some reason content to dump the puck in the offensive zone and chase it instead of trying to create plays. They are, however, able to be opportunistic when they do get their limited chances. After a puck bounces of the defensive zone, freshman Mike Leary takes it in and goes high glove side for his first goal. Down by two, Tufts takes their timeout with 1:27 remaining and comes out of the TO with the goalie pulled. Kyle Gallegos scores with 44 seconds left, but it is too little, too late for the Jumbos, who lose by one goal for the third straight time to begin the season.
As with the Camels, the Jumbos were just in too much penalty trouble to keep up against a better opponent. Middlebury went 2/9 on the PP, both on five on threes.
