Conference Roundup 1/18/14

Bowdoin Polar Bears 9-4-2 (5-4-1 NESCAC)        3
Wesleyan Cardinals 7-6-1 (2-6-0 NESCAC)            2

It was over when....:  Bowdoin scored three unanswered goals in the second and third periods after trailing 2-0 after one period of play to claim their first win outside of the state of Maine this season. The loss is Wesleyan's fourth straight and sixth straight in conference.

Senior Jackson Brandstetter (D, '14) slammed home a Tommy Hartnett (F, '14) pass for Brandstetter's first collegiate goal in 43 career games at the 12:36 mark of the first. Hartnett would get his own goal later in the period to give the Cards the 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

Bowdoin struck back with a power play goal at 18:18 of the second on Colin Downey's (F,/D, '14) team leading 12th tally. It was the only power play of the day for the Polar Bears and the Cardinals went 0/2 on the man advantage on an afternoon when the refs kept the whistles by their chests.

A Wesleyan defensive zone breakdown about halfway through the third left Mitch Barrington (D, '14) alone at the left circle for his first collegiate goal and the game equalizer. Less than three minutes later, Kyle Lockwood (D/F, '14) gained the zone and made a nice pass to John McGinnis (F, '15), who stuffed it home for what proved to be the game winner.

Freshman Dawson Sprigings (G, '17) made 35 saves in a losing effort to fall to 4-5-1 on the season. Max Fenkell (G, '15) turned aside 31 Wesleyan shots to move to 4-1-2 on the season. On the injury front, 2012-13 First-Team All-NESCAC member Ollie Koo (D/F, '14) played in his fifth game of the season and his first game since November. Wesleyan had the reverse luck with 202-13 NESCAC Player of the Year Keith Buehler (F, '14) missing the game after an injury suffered in Friday night's overtime loss to Colby.

Player of the game: John McGinnis (F, '15) The junior from Cocoa, FL scored the game winning goal and assisted on another for a two point afternoon (1-1-2).

The Camels struck back at 17:12 of the second on a power play goal from Kevin Reich (D, '14).  The Camels went 1/5 on the man advantage in the game.

Conn College would then score two goals within nearly a minute of another (6:49, 7:53 of third) on Adam Patel (F, '15)'s first of the season and Cangelosi's first of the game.

The Conts would tie it up with a short handed goal at 14:29 of the third when Truman Landowski (F, '17) forced a turnover at the Camels end and fed Seamus O'Neill (F, '17) for the equalizer. The Conts couldn't get going on their own power play going o-fer on eight opportunities.

Petchonka made 32 saves to improve to 2-4-1 on the season. Charlie Fennell (G, '17), making his third straight start in place of an injured Joe Quattrocchi (G, '14), stopped 25 Camel shots to fall to 2-4-0 on the season.

Amherst Lord Jeffs 9-5-0 (7-3-0 NESCAC)          4
Tufts Jumbos 3-11-0 (1-7-0 NESCAC)                    3

It was over when...: Topher Flannagan (F, '16) scored an unassisted goal at 14:28 -- just eleven seconds out of the box for an elbowing call - -  for the fourth straight unanswered Lord Jeffs goal. Tufts had opened up a surprising 3-0 lead just 0:58 seconds into the second on period on the strength of two goals from Matt Pugh (F, '17).

Amherst scored three second period goals to tie the game. The first of the goals gcame at 8:44 when Elliot Bostrom (D, '14) scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Ryan Edwards (F, '14). If Bostrom gets no more points this eason, he will end his college career with a (1-2-3) stat-line in all four seasons.

Colby 8-5-3 (5-4-1 NESCAC)          3
Trinity 11-3-0 (6-2-0)                      6

It was over when...: Jackson Brewer (F, '15) put in an empty netter for the third Bantams goal of the third period to break a 3-3 tie in the third. The goal extends Brewer's points-streak to seven and Trinity has now won four straight games (all in conference) since blowing a 2-0 lead after two periods at Frozen Fenway. The loss drops Colby back into a tie with bitter rival Bowdoin in the NESCAC standings.

The Bantams took their first lead of the game with Will Gray (F, '14)'s first goal of the year at 15:41 of the second to make it 3-2. Before that, Colby had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, which Trinity erased both times. Colby would then tie it at three 3:10 into the third on Michael Van Siclen (F, '17)'s first collegiate goal. Van Siclen is the brother of Amherst's awesomely named alum, Johnny Van Siclen (F, '13), a 2013 All-NESCAC second team forward.

Ryan Cole (F, '17) said anything you can do Colby rookie, I can do better, and followed up Van Siclen's goal with two third period tallies of his own to combine with his first period goal for the first hat trick of his young career.

Sam Parker (G, '15) was tested frequently and made 28 saves to drop to 7-5-2 on the season. Ben Coulthard (G, '14) made 17 saves to improve to 8-2-0.  Both teams went 1/5 on the power play.

Player of the game: Ryan Cole (F, '17) The Anchorage, Alaska native scored his first career hat-trick. Any questions?
