Williams Ephs 8-2-2 (6-0-2 NESCAC) 2
Johnson & Wales 11-3-0 (3-2-2 ECAC NE) 3 OT
It was over when...: Alex Porrier (F, '16) scored an unassisted goal with just 42 seconds remaining in overtime for JWU's sixth straight win and first over a ranked opponent (Williams was 9th in USCHO and 7th in D3Hockey.com). The loss comes a day after the Ephs beat Wesleyan to remain undefeated in NESCAC play and drops Williams to 2-2-0 in out-of-conference action. One of those wins came over Hamilton in the consolation game of the Buck Supply Classic, so the Ephs OOC record is effectively 1-2.
Williams loses despite nearly doubling JWU's shot total, 41-22. Sean Dougherty (G, '15) made just 19 saves in the loss to fall to 7-2-2 while Wildcats rookie goalie Joey Ballmer (G, '17) made an impressive 39 saves to move to 11-3-0 on the season.
Brett Kangas (D, '16) a first line defenseman for JWU, gets the bragging rights over his father, Williams coach Bill Kangas, in the first ever collegiate meeting between father-son.
Player of the game: Joey Ballmer (G, '17) With no Wildcat netting more than one point, Ballmer has to get the nod for withstanding the barrage of Ephs shots. The freshman from Kalamazoo, MI is now 4th in the nation in both minutes played (837:12) and save% (.947) and 8th in the nation in Goals Against Average (1.58).
