Bowdoin, 6-3-2 (2-3-1 NESCAC), tops UNE 5-8-1 (2-5 ECAC-E), 4-3
It was over……..when the final buzzer sounded. Returning to
the ice after a nearly month long layoff, Bowdoin pulled off a 4-3 win after
taking it’s only lead of the game when Connor Quinn (’15) put home a rebound
with 7:06 remaining in the third period. It was Quinn’s 2nd goal of
the night and 6th of the season. The junior forward from Sudbury, MA
had had a busy night; he’d hit the post early in the game following a huge fore-checking
effort by line mate Danny Palumbo (’15)
Bowdoin had trailed 2-0 in the 2nd period, rallied
to tie it only to see UNE take back the lead 3-2 just 27 seconds later. The
second period saw six goals scored in just over seven minutes; four of them
came in a span of1: 10.
First year David Goff (F ’17) got UNE on the board with a
power play goal while Bowdoin’s Matt Rubinoff (’16) sat for hooking. Patrick
Borer (D ’15) and Sam Vikich (F ’16) assisted. Borer followed with a goal of
his own on screened slap shot from the point. The junior from Minnesota
celebrated like it was 1980 in Lake Placid; the box score shows it was his
first goal of the season, but we’re thinking it might have been his first ever.
Nick Kolb (F ’15) and Zach Lokey (F ’14) picked up assists.
Bowdoin’s Colin Downey (’14) got one back at 9:46 of the 2nd
with a quick one timer from the slot, his 7th of the season, with a
helper from Matt Rubinoff (’16). Connor Quinn’s first goal, a solo effort just
18 seconds later knotted the score at 2 and seemed to right Bowdoin’s ship but
Lokey answered for just 27 seconds later. Kolb and the Nor’easter’s leading
scorer (6-8-14), Zeth Zeilinski, assisted.
When Bowdoin’s John McGinnis tied the game again at 3, only
1:10 had run off the clock since UNE had held a 2-0 lead. 9:02 still remained
in the period in what looked to be a crazy period. But things settled down and
the teams left the ice at the end of the 2nd tied at 3.
The game saw Kyle Lockwood’s return to the ice for the Polar
Bears for the first time since the Colby game of November 23rd. The
senior was 7th on the team in scoring last season at 10-12-22 and
really came on strong in the second half. He had several good chances in this
game including a turn around shot in the first period. It seemed as though McGinnis
was trying to will Lockwood to score during a second period power play. The
senior went down hard in the third period what looked like a hamstring injury and
did not return to play.
Quinn’s 2nd goal was the only scoring on final
period. He bore down hard on the left wing a let a shot go from the middle
slot. With an assist from Ryan Collier (’14) Quinn put the loose puck in the
UNE goal for the game winner.
Steve Messina (’14) ended with 22 saves for Bowdoin, 9 of
them in the 2nd period, while Craig Ryan (’15) was busier for UNE stopping
33, including 16 in the 2nd period.
In a relatively clean game Bowdoin scoreless on two power plays while the Nor’easters were one for three.
