Bowdoin freshman Matt Sullivan (#26) provided the heroics on Senior Day in an action packed day of NESCAC hockey that saw 3 of 5 games go to OT |
Colby 10-9-3 (7-8-1 NESCAC) 2
Box Score
Trinity took a 3-0 lead early in the second period on Mike Hawkrigg's second of the game and the Bantams never looked back. Concannon semifinalist Ben Coulthard missed his second straight game and Nathaniel Heilbron made 31 saves to sweep the weekend. Colby freshman Ben Csiernik - who replaced Sam Parker in the second period last night after Parker gave up three goals in a minute - made 30 saves in the loss.
Trinity sweeps the Maine weekend and with Amherst's tie of Conn College, the Bantams are assured sole possession of first place in the NESCAC headed into the final regular season weekend. Colby, who entered the weekend with dreams of a home playoff game, drops to sixth in the conference thanks to Middlebury's win over Williams.
Player of the game: Mike Hawkrigg (F, '16) The sophomore scored two goals to end the weekend tied with teammate Jackson Brewer for the D-III national lead with 48 points.
Wesleyan 11-9-2 (6-9-1 NESCAC) 3
Bowdoin 13-7-2 (8-7-1 NESCAC) 4 OT
Box Score
Bowdoin freshman Matt Sullivan scored with 16 seconds remaining to give the Polar Bears sole possession of the fourth spot in the NESCAC headed into the final weekend of the regular season. Wesleyan is tied with Conn College for seventh, but the Cardinals have played one more game than the Camels. On Senior Day in Brunswick, Polar Bear senior Erik Bertin scored his first goal since his freshman season at 9:46 of the third to tie the game at three.
Player of the game: Matt Sullivan (D, '17) Game winning, unassisted goal in OT as a freshman on Senior Day. Swagalicious. Sullivan is the son of Vancouver Canucks assistant coach Mike Sullivan, who had never seen his son play collegiate hockey before today because of the grueling pro hockey schedule. Thanks to the NHL's Olympic break, Mike was there to see his son's heroics.
Tufts 3-18-0 (1-14-0 NESCAC) 1
Hamilton 5-12-3 (4-9-2 NESCAC) 3
Box Score
Pat Curtis put in an empty netter with 17.8 seconds remaning to seal Hamilton's season saving win against Tufts. The Continentals sit three points out of the playoffs as they head into Sunday's matchup with Conn College, one of the teams they are chasing for the final playoff spot. Tufts has already been eliminated from playoff contention.
The Continentals wore camouflage jerseys in support of the Wounded Warrior Project, a great charity that does worthy work to support wounded combat veterans. Bowdoin, Middlebury and Trinity have also had WWP games. The Hamilton event was brought together by Continental senior Dom Jancaterino, who will attend Marine Corps Officer Candidate School after graduation.
Player of the game: Zach Arnold (G, '15) The junior goaltender, who had never played a minute of college hockey until January 24th of this year, made 32 big saves to earn his first collegiate victory.
Williams 13-6-3 (9-4-3 NESCAC) 1
Middlebury 9=10=3 (7-7-2 NESCC) 2 OT
Box Score
Louis Belisle rocketed his team leading 14th goal past Ephs goaltender Sean Dougherty with 40 seconds left in overtime to give the host Panthers the win. It was the second game in as many days between Williams and Middlebury that finished regulation with the teams tied at 1; the Ephs and Panthers skated to a 1-1 tie in Williamstown on Friday night.
Dougherty made 42 saves in defeat, as Middlebury outshot Williams 44-23. Panthers sophomore Liam Moorfield-Yee made 22 saves in his sixth straight start in net as coach Bill Beaney finally seems to have decided on a starting goaltender. Four Middlebury goalies have seen time in net this season with playing time raging from 159 - 426 minutes in net. The current starter, Moorfield-Yee, wasn't even on the roster on opening day.
Williams is now winless in their last four (0-3-1) and ends the weekend in third after entering last week as the frontrunner to win the NESCAC. Trinity's weekend sweep in Maine now makes it impossible for the Ephs to finish the regular season in the top spot. Dougherty was shaky in the loss to Wesleyan, but he has given up 2, 1 and 2 goals, respectively, in the last three of the winless streak. The Ephs will need to start lighting the lamp to contend for a NESCAC title.
For Middlebury, they move into fifth and sit one point behind Bowdoin for the fourth and final home playoff game. The Polar Bears won the season series (1-0-1), though, so it is a de facto two point lead for Bowdoin.
Player of the game: Louis Belisle (D, '14) The Quebecois assassin struck in overtime to keep Middlebury's hopes of a home playoff game alive.
Conn College 7-12-2 (6-8-1 NESCAC) 1
Amherst 11-3-1 (13-6-2 NESCAC) 1 OT
Box Score
In the third NESCAC OT game of the day, Conn College outplayed Amherst in a defensive duel (36 shots total) to earn a big road tie and continue their resurgence (5-2-1in last eight games). Amherst owns the tiebreaker over Trinity, but the Lord Jeffs tie assures Trinity will at least be one point ahead of Amherst for first place come weekend's end. Amherst is three points out headed into their game with last place Tufts tomorrow.
For Conn, they sit in eighth place as they head to Clinton, NY for their Sunday afternoon matinee with ninth place Hamilton. In the crazy NESCAC, the Camels could finish next weekend anywhere from out of the playoffs to hosting a first round playoff game.
Player of the game: Dave Cunningham (G, '16) The sophomore goaltender stopped 19 pucks, including some timely saves down the stretch.
