NESCAC Finals Rapid Reaction: Bowdoin 3 Amherst 2

It's the third NESCAC title game victory for Bowdoin's senior class.(but only
their second title, as the first was technically vacated)

Amherst  2
Bowdoin 3
FINAL 2OT

John McGinnis (F, '15) scored 22 seconds into the second overtime period of the NESCAC men's ice hockey championship to give Bowdoin a 3-2 victory over Amherst and the Polar Bears second straight NESCAC title.  The first OT period was an action packed back-and-forth affair with scoring opportunities for  both teams.

Bowdoin took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the first on Danny Palumbo (F, '15)'s fourth goal of the season, assisted by Matt Sullivan (D, '17). The score would remain that way until Elliot Bostrom (D, '14), who had a five minute game misconduct in the semis against Williams, scored on an assist from Brian Safstrom (F, '14) with 2:20 left in the second period.

The Polar Bears would strike back 12:25 into the third on Kyle Lockwood (F/D, '14)'s sixth of the season, unassisted. The Jeffs would even it up less than two minutes later as Safstrom added to his two assists on the weekend with a goal on a feed from Aaron Deutsch (D, '14). Regulation ended with the score knotted at two.

It is the second straight NESCAC title for Bowdoin, who took home the crown last year on home ice against Williams as the top overall seed. Despite what had been a disappointing season up until the NESCAC playoffs, which saw the prohibitive favorite Polar Bears finish fifth in the 'Cac, they will return to the NCAA tournament by virtue of the NESCAC's authomatic bid. The Polar Bears are the host school for this year's D-III Frozen Four, which will be played at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, ME.

Tune in at 10:30 PM to the NCAA D-III MIH selection show to found out where the Polar Bears will be playing in the NCAA tournament.  The Trinity community will also be watching, as the Bantams have a very good chance of being selected as one of the three at-large bids for the NCAA tourney.
