Conn College (1-3-2; 0-1-2 NESCAC) 2
With Liam Moorfield-Yee (G, '16) pulled for an extra attacker, Middlebury's Vincent Gisonti (F, '18) redirected a Max Greenwald (F/D, '16) shot to even the game at 2 with 49 seconds left. It was Gisonti's team leading fourth goal of the season and came in the second meeting between the two squads in less than a week. The Camels defeated the Panthers 1-0 last weekend in the consolation game of the Primelink Tournament at Norwich (technically a non-conference game).
Middlebury jumped out to the lead late in the 1st, when Mark Lyman (F, '19) scored his first collegiate goal on a rebound off a Mike Najjar (F, '17) shot. The Camels took the lead until the final minute of regulation with two second period goals from Joe Birmingahm (F, '16) on helpers from Joe Giordano (F, '16). Moorfield-Yee made 35 saves in his second straight start for the Panthers, which begs the question if Stephen Klein (G, '18) no longer has the starting Middlebury job wrapped up. Tom Conlin (G, '16) made 36 saves for the Camels.
Williams (4-1-0; 3-0-0 NESCAC) 2
Tufts (1-3-2; 0-2-1 NESCAC) 0
Noah Klagg (G, '16) stopped all 36 shots he faced on the night to move to 7-1-2 between the pipes for his career. It is his first shutout since a non-conference game against Wentworth his freshman year. It's a small sample size of five games, but the Ephs have the nation's best defense, letting up just one goal per contest with three of them coming in the loss to Geneseo. On the other end of the ice, George Hunkele (F, '17) had a hand in both tallies on the evening, notching a goal and an assist.
Devin Albert (F, '17)'s tally on a give-and-go with EJ Rauseo (F, '17) in the first proved to be the game winner in the 207th installment of the pine tree state rivalry. It was the first goal of the year from Albert, who missed the first four games of season due to injury. Albert and Rauseo each had 24 points to lead the young 2014-15 Mules. Michael Rudolf (F, '18) added a goal in the 2nd and freshman Nick O'Connor (F, '19) added his team leading second tally of the season in the 3rd for the insurance goals. Reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Emerson Verrier (G, '18) made 43 saves for his first career shutout.
For Bowdoin, Peter Cronin (G, '18) made 32 saves in defeat. Barring a NESCAC playoff game between the Mules and Polar Bears, this was the last game at Colby for 33 year Bowdoin coach Terry Meagher, who announced that he will retire at the end of the season. Before the game, Colby honored former coach Jack Kelley (1955-62), whom the college named the men's coaching position after this season. Kelley went on to an illustrious career after leaving Colby (which he briefly returned to in the 70s) going on to coach Boston University, serving as the original GM/coach of the New England Whalers, as well as serving as President of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 88 year old Kelley dropped the ceremonially first puck. Mules and PBs face off on Saturday in Brunswick for round 208.
You won on Friday? You lost? No mind, there's no rest for the weary nor victorious in the 'Cac, as all these times are right back at it on Saturday, as well as the four other NESCAC teams that didn't play on Friday. Done, done, on to the next one.
