Conference Roundup: 1/25/13

Trinity Bantams(9-4-3; 6-2-3)                1
Hamilton Continentals (5-9-3; 3-6-2)        0

It was over when: Jackson Brewer (F, So.) scored a goal with 1:20 left to spoil the Citrus Bowl for Hamilton. He was assisted by player to watch Zachary Lombardi (F, Sr.) and the Bantams are now 6-0-1 in games that Lombardi gets a point.

For the second straight year, the Bantams blanked the Continentals in their most attended game of the year. Shots in favor of Trinity 30-24 but Hamilton definitely had its chances throughout the game. Both goalies were excellent and it is hard to see Joe Quattrocchi (G, Jr.) take the loss.

Freshman announcers Sarah and Katie were excited for the event, conjecturing about whether fans had snuck in contraband citrus to throw on the ice when (if) the Continentals scored; turns out Trinity made the security staff's job easier. The crowd, estimated as a sellout, seemed to be "half the school" to the announcing duo. On a lighter note, the girls confessed to mispronouncing freshman forward Brad Prevel (F, Fr.)'s name, until they heard it corrected in a class they share with the men's icer.

Hamilton holds at seventh in the 'CAC, missing an opportunity to move up into a tie with Wesleyan, who lost to Amherst. Trinity keeps pace with the aforementioned Lord Jeffs to stay tied for third.

Player of the game: Benjamin Coulthard (G, Jr.) for his NESCAC leading third shutout of the year.

Box Score: Trinity 1/Hamilton 0

Wesleyan Cardinals (8-7-2; 4-5-2)           1
Amherst  Lord Jeffs  (11-4-2; 7-3-1)      3

It was over when: The Lord Jeffs scored three goals in the second to break a 0-0 tie after one period of play. Johnny Van Siclen (F, Sr.)  led off the scoring with two goals and assisted on another to Topher Flanagan (F, Fr.),  who scored his first NESCAC goal on the power play with 30 seconds left in the second.

The Cardinals got a shot early in the first  on Andrew Kurlandski (F, Jr.)'s game misconduct for a hit from behind, but could not capitalize in their five minutes with the extra man. The rest of the first period was "pretty even" according to Jeff's announcer Hugh Campbell, with the goalies being the stars of the period despite the low number of shots. Between periods Campbell held interviews with Lady Jeff hockey players while the Zambonie did its thing.

Down 3-0, Cardinal coach Chris Potter surprisingly decided to pull his goalie with a few minutes left in the game. It worked...sort of. Wesleyan didn't get back in the game, but they did avoid the shutout with a goal from Tommy Hartnett  (F, Jr.), assisted by Cardinal player to watch Nick Craven (F, Sr.).

Shots in favor of Wesleyan 21-18. Amherst's defense was stout, as usual. Lord Jeff player to watch  Nathan Corey (G, Sr.) faced 21 shots or less for his fourth straight start. The Lord Jeffs were able to dictate the pace and flipped the script on the Cardinals, scoring two power play goals to the Cardinals none. It is the first multi-power play goal game for the Lord Jeffs since November 20th against Westfield State.

Player of Game: Johnny Van Siclen  (F, Sr.)  for his name and his game. Had a hand in all three goals (1-2-3).

Box Score : Amherst 3/Wesleyan 1

Middlebury Panthers   (7-8-2; 5-3-2)       4
Conn College Camels (5-9-3; 1-7-3)          1

It was over when: Robbie Donahoe (D, Jr. ) scored for his second point of the game to make it 4-0 early in the third.  Player to watch Matt Silcoff  (F, Fr.) led off the scoring in the first with his team leading fifth power play goal and his first goal since 1/4. The Camels point leader JC Cangelosi (F, So.) scored late in the third to avoid the shutout. Middlebury out shot Conn. College 40-29.

Middlebury stays in fifth, and builds a four point buffer on sixth place Wesleyan with the win. Conn. College misses a chance to move within a point of seventh place Hamilton.

Player of the gameRobbie Donahoe (D, Jr. ) set up the first goal and scored the final goal of the night for the Panthers.

Box Score : Middlebury 4/Conn. College 1

Williams Ephs (10-4-2; 8-2-1)                5
Tufts Jumbos (4-8-1; 1-8-2)                     3

It was over when: Williams forward Nick Anderson  (F, Jr.) put the Ephs up 5-3 with 7:05 remaining in the third. Tufts scored first with a first period goal by Blake Edwards (D, So.) , but Ephs leading scorer Peter Mistretta (F, So.) tied it less than a minute later.

In the second Mistretta netted his second goal of the game and 13th of the year to go up 2-1, before the Jumbos tied it on a goal by Derrek Schartz (F, So.).  Alex DeBaere (F, So.) put Williams up 3-2  with about four minutes left in the second, and the Ephs led the rest of the way.

Player to watch  John Wickman (F, Sr.) added a goal in the third, but Tufts was without their player to watch and leading scorer Kyle Gallegos  (F, Jr.).

Tufts outshot Williams 35-29. Williams remains alone in second place with the win and Tufts remains in ninth.

Player of the gamePeter Mistretta (F, So.) for his two goal night.

Box Score : Williams 5/Tufts 3
