Non-Conference Roundup: 1/15/13

Hamilton (4-7-3):  2
Cortland (6-9-2): 3

It was over when...: Cortand goalie Lyle Rocker (G, Sr.) turned away the furious 6 on 5 empty net Continental attack in the final minute to hold on for the win.  Four of the five goals were scored in the second period. Red Dragon senior A.J. Moyer (F, Jr.) scored a pair of goals to start off and Continental captain Andrew White (D, Sr.) scored to cut it to 2-1. Cortland's Nick Zappia (F, So.) scored in the last minute of the second to make it 3-1.

The only goal of the fourth came on a power play after a game misconduct on Cortland's Matty Davie (F, Sr.).  Following up on his first collegiate goal against Tufts, Scott Vazquez (D, Fr.) fired a high shot past Rocker to cut it to 3-2.  Hamilton out shot Cortland 38-26.

Of note was Cortland's engaging announcer Bobby Comstock.  Other than the faux pas of mistakenly calling Continental backup goalie Cam Gibbar (G, Sr.) by the starter's name (Joe Quattrocchi), Comstock called an informative, entertaining game. Joined by Cortland women's coach Earl Utter in the third period, the duo broke down the book on Rocker (shoot high), bemoaned the new icing rule (which would ironically seal the game for Cortland in the final minute), and even threw in some classic rock discussion at the end.

Player of the game: Lyle Rocker (G, Jr.) for his 36 saves on 38 shots.

Box Score: Hamilton 2/Cortland 3

Williams (8-3-2): 3
Babson (9-3-3): 3

It was over when: Babson erased the third one-goal Ephs lead of the game in the third on Mike Driscoll (F, So.)'s second goal of the night. Paul Steinig (D, Jr.), John Wickman (F, Sr.) and Peter Mistretta (F, So.) had goals for Williams. Wickman continues the USCHO reverse jinx, scoring in three straight games after the USCHO feature on Williams mentioned his not having scored this season. Player to watch Noah Klag (G, Fr.) earned a tie on 22 saves in his first collegiate start.

Former Wesleyan leading scorer Nik Tasiopoulos (F, Jr.) had two assists for the Beavers. Babson is now 3-0-1 against nationally ranked teams. Babson still hasn't beaten Williams since 2008, going (0-6-2) in the last eight meetings.

Player of the game: Mike Driscoll  (F, So.) for his two goal night, including the game tying goal in the third.

Box Score: Williams 3/Babson 3

Conn. College (4-6-3) : 5
Curry (7-7-1) : 1

It was over when...: Conn. College jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and never looked back. The Camels Stephen Brennan (F, Fr.) had a breakout game, netting his first two collegiate goals. Ian DeLong (F, Sr.) had the only goal for the Colonials. Curry outshot Conn. College 38-32 and despite their five goals, the Camels went 0-6 on the power play.

Player of the gameStephen Brennan (F, Fr.) for his first two collegiate goals. Honorable mention to Tom Conlin (G, Fr.) for his 37 saves on 38 shots.

Box Score: Conn. College 5/Curry 1

Tufts (5-7-1) : 2
Wentworth (7-7-1) : 0

It was over when...: Texas native Brian Phillips (G, Jr.) turned away 22 shots for his second shutout of the year. Junior Tim Mitropoulos (F, Jr.) scored his first collegiate goal in the first and Tufts' captain Dylan Plimmer (F, Sr.) lit the lamp to round out the scoring. The win is only the second in eight games for the Jumbos.

Player of the game: Brian Phillips (G, Jr.) for his second shutout of the year. Honorable mention to Mitropoulos for his first collegiate goal.

Box Score: Tufts 2/Wentworth 0
