The Lowdown: Rivalry
This game has been dubbed "The Game" by some and "The Second Smallest Populated State in the Union isn't Big Enough for the Both of Us" by others (ok, no one calls it that). The Green Mountain State rivals faced off for the 144th time back in November in the Primelink Shootout finals. Norwich rallied from a two goal deficit in the third to win 5-4 on a goal (pictured above) by senior cadet Colin Mulvey (F, Sr.) with 6.7 seconds left.
Both teams are coming off tough 1 goal losses; Norwich fell for the first time this year in an ECAC West/East turf war against the Knights of Neumann (Neumann!) in the finals of the Northfield Bank Tournament (Conn. College finished third). Middlebury lost 2-1 at Trinity on Saturday.
Norwich enters the game as favorites, because they are the number one team in the country and that sort of goes without saying. But Middlebury is at home and based on the contest in November, anything can happen. The saying, "You can throw out the records" is overused for rivalries, but at least in this case it is accurate.
Key(s) to the game: Bartender, another shot
Norwich dominates in almost all categories, but especially in shot differential, averaging 30 shots for to only 17 against for the season. The cadets outshot the Panthers in the first meeting 30-23 and even in their lost against Neumann they dominated the shot count 37-14. It is unreasonable to expect Middlebury to stop a significant shotcount for Norwich, but they can hope to counter with a high shotcount of their own.
Players to watch
Norwich Colin Mulvey (F, Sr.) It's hard to choose from an offensive arsenal that features six different players with double digit points, but Mulvey gets the nod for his heroics in the previous match-up between these two in addition to the fact that he will be hungry, having been held pointless for only the second time this season against Neumann.
Middlebury Matt Silcoff (F, Fr.) With Louis Belisle (F, Jr.) struggling, Middlebury will need second leading scorer Silcoff to step up if they want the upset.
