Conference Roundup: 2/9/13

Middlebury College Panthers (10-9-2; 9-4-2)        2
Williams College Ephs (13-5-3; 10-3-2)             6

It was over when...: Williams scored three goals in the second to break open a 2-1 game and end the period up 5-1 in the only NESCAC men's hockey game on Saturday (thanks Nemo!).

1st Period: Senior Eph Evan Dugdale (F, Sr.) led off the scoring with about 8 minutes to play in the first to put Williams on top 1-0 after 1. Middlebury had a flurry of shots at the end of the period, but sophomore blueliner  Brian McNamara  (D, So.) blocked several shots in a strong defensive effort for the Ephs.  There were no penalties in the first period. Sean Doughtery (G, So.) made the start for the Ephs with Dan Fullam (G, So.) going for Middlebury. Williams was without leading scorer Peter Mistretta (F, So.) because of concussion symptoms.

2nd Period: Action packed second period. On the first power play of the game on a trip from Matthieu Castonguay (D, Sr.), Paul Steinig (D, Jr.) put in a rebound 4:17  into the period for his third goal of the year to put Williams up 2-1. As the Williams announcers said, it wasn't pretty but the scoreboard doesn't care.

Player to watch Louis Belisle (F, Jr.) went top shelf on Dougherty about two minutes later to make it a 3-2 game. Later, John Wickman (F, Sr.)  put what the Williams announcers called a "casual wrister" in on net; Fullam couldn't handle the routine play and the Ephs went up 3-1 13:16 into the second. Coach Beaney then made the goalie switch, putting in Nick BonDurant (g, Jr.) for Fullam.

Nick Anderson (F, Jr.) stuffed in a nice pass in front of the net from Mark Lyons (F, Sr.) to put the Ephs up 4-1, less than three minutes after BonDurant entered the game. After Dougherty made a nice sliding save on Middlebury leading point getter Derek Pimentel (F, So.), there was what appeared to be an own goal off Connor Frick (D, Fr.) on the other end.  Anderson dumped a pass in and Craig Kitto (F, So.) got credit for the goal to put the Ephs up 5-1.  It was Kitto's first goal of the year in his fourth game this year, having missed the first 17 games to begin the season after a strong 22 point (8-14-22) freshman campaign.

3rd Period: Wickman got  his second goal of the game at 10:08 in to put Williams up 6-1. Robbie Donahoe (D, Jr.) sniped one past a screened Dougherty at 16:59  but it was too little too late, as Williams won 6-2.  The normally potent Panther power play went 0-3, with the Ephs going 1-3 on the man advantage. Shots in favor of Williams 37-36.

Williams takes over sole possesion of second place from the Panthers, with both teams going at it again tomorrow afternoon at 4 PM at Middlebury. In the post game show on 92.1 WVTK (Addison County Vermont Radio), the announcers selected Dugdale (1-1-2) as the third star, Dougherty as the second star (34 saves) and Wickman (2-0-2) as the first star of the evening.

Player of the gameJohn Wickman (F, Sr.) for his two goals, including what turned out to be the game winner. The non box-score player of the game, though, goes to Brian McNamara (D, So.) for his solid stay at home defense, numerous blocked shots and excellent work on special teams.

Box Score: Middlebury 2/Williams 6              School Recap(s): Williams
