The Week in Review: Nemo Edition (2/9 - 2/18)

Due to the spreading out of the games by Winterstorm Nemo, Week in Review is actually for the past two weeks. These are the final regular season standings heading into postseason play and the final week in review of the season. Bring on the playoffs!

1. Bowdoin (19-3-2; 11-2-1)
1st in NESCAC - 28 points
This week's record: 2-1-1

The week that was: On Winterstorm Nemo weekend, Bowdoin only played one game, a 3-3 tie in Middeltown, CT against Wesleyan on Sunday 2/10/13. The following weekend the Polar Bears returned home for a regular Friday/Saturday schedule, defeating Tufts, 6-1, and beating Conn College, 2-1, in OT. With the OT win against CC, the Polar Bears clinched the first overall seed for the NESCAC playoffs. On Monday night at Brooks School, Trinity blew out Bowdoin 10-5.

The week ahead: Bowdoin hosts eight seed Hamilton on Saturday, February 23rd at 1PM in the first round of the playoffs.

Player of the week: Ollie Koo (D/F, Jr.) The versatile forward switched between forward and defense and still led the team in points in the two week stretch (3-3-6). Last week, Koo was selected as a semifinalist for the Joe Concannon Award

2Williams (15-6-3; 12-4-2)
2nd in NESCAC - 26 points
This week's record 3-1-0

The week that was: The week before Nemo, Williams scored two shots on 108 shots in three games. In the subsequent four games, the Ephs rebounded for 15 goals. On Nemo weekend, Williams split a pair of games with travel partner Middlebury, beating the Panthers, 6-2, at home, then losing in Vermont, 3-1, the next day. The Ephs spent the final weekend of the regular season on the road, defeating rival Amherst, 4-2, and overcoming a 3-0 third period deficit against Hamilton to win 4-3 in OT. The win gave Williams second place outright.

The week ahead: The Ephs host Colby in the first round of playoffs on Saturday at 3 PM.

Player of the week: Sean Dougherty (G, So.) Not necessarily the most dominant four game stretch for the only Joe Concannon Award sophomore semifinalist, but Dougherty was solid throughtout, never giving up more than three goals and coming up huge in a 35 save win against Amherst. The whole team gets an honorable mention for picking up the scoring in the absence of leading scorer Peter Mistretta (F, So.).

3. Trinity (14-6-3; 11-4-3)
3rd in NESCAC - 25 points
This week's record: 3-1-0

The week that was:  The Bantams only played one contest Nemo weekend, a 7-2 trouncing of Colby at home in a benefit game for the Wounded Warrior Project. The following week, they split a home and home with travel partner Wesleyan, beating the Cardinals in Middeltown,3-2, in OT on Friday, and losing at home, 2-1, on Saturday. With a home playoff game on the line, the Bantams blew out Bowdoin, 10-5, at the Brooks Schools on Monday to take the third seed.

The week aheadThe win at Bowdoin sets up a playoff game at home on Saturday (4 PM) against sixth seed and travel partner Wesleyan. It will be the third game in nine days against the Cardinals for the Bantams.

Player of the week: Jackson Brewer (F, So.) The Bantam Brewer had a hat trick and four points against Colby, earning him NESCAC player of the week from the league last week. He followed it up with two goals against Wesleyan, one with four seconds remaining in regulation to tie it and one in OT to win. Brewer only had one point (an assist) in the final two games, but he ends the regular season as the Bantams leading scorer (11-10-21).

4. Amherst (15-6-3; 11-5-2
 4th in NESCAC - 24 points
This week's record: 3-1-0

The week that was: The Lord Jeffs took care of business on the road, beating Conn College, 4-2, and Tufts, 6-1, on Nemo weekend. Amherst entered the final weekend tied for second with  Williams and Middlebury, both of whom the Lord Jeffs got to play. Despite outshooting the Ephs by 21 on Friday, Amherst lost 4-2. They followed it up with a 5-3 win over the Panthers on Saturday. Amherst and Middlebury both had 24 points at season's end, but the Jeffs get the four seed by virtue of their season sweep over the Panthers.

The week ahead:  Middlebury doesn't have to wait long for a rematch with Amherst, as the fifth seed Panthers come back to Orr Rink this Saturday to face off against the fourth seed Lord Jeffs at 1 PM in the first round of the playoffs.

Player of the week: Brian Safstrom (F, Jr.) had goals in all four games (4-3-7), and current has a 5 game goal streak and seven game point streak.

5th in NESCAC - 24 points
This week's record: 2-2-0

The week that was: The Panthers split the home and home with travel partner Williams on Nemo weekend. In the final weekend, they took care of business against Hamilton, 6-1, before losing to Amherst, 5-3, in a back and forth game on Saturday. Middlebury lost both matchups against the Lord Jeffs this season and thus gets the fifth seed despite tying Amherst in the standings with 24 points.

The week ahead:  Rematch with the Lord Jeffs  in the first round of the playoffs at Amherst on Saturday (1 PM).

Player of the week:  Mike Peters (F, So.) After Fullam and BonDurant gave up six goals in the front end of the home and home against Williams, Coach Bill Beaney turned to sophomore Mike Peters, who had no career starts. Peters gave up only one goal on 27 shots in his debut, causing "dancing in the streets of Highland, Maryland (his hometown)" according to the Middlebury radio announcer. In the final weekend, he gave up only one goal to Hamilton and even in the loss to Amherst made 32 saves despite giving up four goals.

6.  Wesleyan (10-10-4; 6-8-4)
6th in NESCAC - 16 points
This week's record: 1-2-1

The week that was:  In the only game Wesleyan played on Nemo weekend, the Cardinals tied Bowdoin, 3-3. Back in January, the Cardinals handed the Polar Bears, at that time the only undefeated team in all of D-III men's hockey, their first loss of the season. Heading into the final three games of the season, the Cardinals knew they would finish sixth in the NESCAC at season'send, the only team to know their final regular season fate so early.

On Tuesday 2/12, Wesleyan lost, 4-2, in a Nemo postponed game against Colby hosted by Phillps Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. In a home and home against travel partner Trinity in the final weekend of the regular season, the Cardinals split, losing at home and winning on the road.

The week ahead: Six seed Wesleyan heads back to Hartford for the third game in nine days against third seed Trinity in a playoff game on Saturday at 4 PM.

Player of the week: Nolan Daley (G, Fr.)  made 37 saves in the tie against Bowdoin and the freshman ruined senior day for Trinity, making 33 saves to hold the Bantams to one goal. Lost in his return home to Exeter against Colby, but still made 28 saves on 31 shots.

7th in NESCAC - 12 points
This week's record: 3-1-0

The week that was : Colby lost to Trinity, 7-2, on Nemo weekend and that was the end of losing for the Mules in the regular season. After defeating Wesleyan on Tuesday 2/12 at Exeter, Colby returned home to beat Conn College, 2-1, and Tufts, 6-2, to vault into the playoffs and claim the number seven seed. It is the first three game winning streak for Colby men's hockey since they did it three times back in the 2010-2011 season.

The week ahead: The seventh seed Mules hit the road for a playoff matchup with second seed Williams on Saturday at 3 PM.

Player of the weekSam Parker  (G, So.) Yet another goalie selection for player of the week and certainly a deserved one. Parker went (3-0-0) in the two week stretch to improve to (6-3-0) on the season; gave up 5 goals on 74 shots for a .932 save percentage, with the highlight being a 36 save effort against Conn College

8. Hamilton (6-15-3; 4-12-2)
8th in NESCAC - 10 points
This week's record: 1-3-0

The week that was:  The Continentals continued their losing ways against Tufts on 2/10, losing to the Jumbos, 6-4, to drop their fifth straight. Hamilton rebounded the next day against Conn College to keep their playoff hopes alive. Down 3-2 after 2 periods, Hamilton exploded for an uncharacteristic five goals in the third period to beat the Camels 7-3.

The Conts opened up their final home weekend of the year with a 6-1 loss to Middlebury on Friday. On Senior Saturday, Hamilton carried a 3-0 lead halfway through the third period and was poised for an upset, which would have given them the seven seed, over 11th ranked Williams. But the Continentals fell apart in the third, giving up three goals in the final six minutes and losing 4-3 in OT to drop down to eighth.

The week ahead: Eight seed Hamilton travels to Brunswick for a playoff game on Saturday (1 PM) with the top seeded Polar Bears of Bowdoin.

Player of the weekMarko Brelih  (D, Fr.) had seven points in the four games (2-5-7), including four points in the win over Conn College (1-3-4).

9Connecticut College (7-14-3; 3-12-3)
9th in NESCAC - 9 points
This week's record: 0-4-0

The week that was: After sweeping Tufts a couple of weeks ago to move into seventh, the Camels lost their final four games to miss the playoffs. On Sunday 2/10, CC lost to Amherst, 4-2, and followed it up with a 7-3 loss to Hamilton on Senior Day in a game that the Camels were leading 3-2 after two periods.

In the final weekend in Maine, Coach Jim Ward's squad lost a pair of 2-1 games. On Friday against Colby, a Mule goal with 1:02 remaining downed the Camels. On Saturday, Conn College took top seeded and nationally fourth ranked Bowdoin to OT. Knowing that his team needed a win to make the playoffs, Ward pulled the goalie in OT in favor of an extra attacker. The Polar Bears netted an empty net goal with 1.8 seconds remaining to end the Camels season.

The week ahead: Camels did not make the playoffs, so no more games in the 2012-13 season for them.

Player of the week Keith Veronesi (F, Jr.) had three points in the two week stretch (2-1-3) to end the season tied for the team lead in goals and second on the team in points (9-10-19).

10. Tufts (7-15-2; 2-14-2)
10th in NESCAC - 6 points
This week's record: 1-3-0

The week that was: The Jumbos defeated Hamilton,6-4, on 2/10 to keep their playoff hopes alive. It was Tufts first conference win since a November 17th victory over Wesleyan in the opening weekend of the season. The Jumbos followed up the win over the Conts with a 6-1 loss against Amherst on Senior Day.

The Jumbos left for the Pine Tree State on the final weekend of NESCAC regular season play knowing they needed to win both games to have any shot at the playoffs. They were eliminated from playoff contention with a 6-1 loss to Bowdoin on Friday and closed out the season with a 6-2 loss to Colby on Saturday.

The week ahead: The season is over for the Tufts men's hockey team. See you in 2013-14.

Player of the week
Andrew White (F, So.) for his first career hat trick (3-0-3) in the win against Hamilton
