After a somewhat disappointing 2012-13 season, the Lord Jeffs return to the ice with some questions. For starters, they lost two of their top three scorers in Van Siclen and Moher. With a small recruiting class of only three, with only one being a forward, the Lord Jeffs will need to look internally to replace the lost production.

Defensively, the Lord Jeffs return six of their nine defenders, though the defenders they lost were key contributors. In net, the Lord Jeffs have lost their starting goalie for the second straight year. 2011-12 D-III Player of the Year Jonathan LaRose graduated and Nathan Corey filled in nicely in 2012-13, but then he graduated as well. Prep school standout Dave Cunningham played well in non-conference play, but only played in three conference games last season. He had a shutout against Colby, but that was only on four shots, and he gave up five goals on fourteen shots to Trinity. The talent is certainly there, but if he will produce remains a question.

Predictions/Projections: The Lord Jeffs enter the season ranked 15th in the D3Hockey.com (D3H) November 11th Top 15 Poll. For the season, they are projected by D3Hockey.com's computers to finish 19th out of 79 D-II/III schools.

As far as the NESCAC is concerned, the predictions vary.  Word Press blog has them at seventh, while D3H has them tied for third and USHCO has them at fourth. Our fan/coach/whoveer poll has them finishing in third.

Out of Conference Schedule: The Lord Jeffs open up out-of-conference play at home vs. St. Michael's of the ECAC East on November 26th. The Purple Knights, whom the Lord Jeffs beat 4-1 last year, are 0-1-0 as of the start of NESCAC play and are projected to finish 70th  of 79 D-II/III teams by D3Hockey.com. They then travel for a tough road game against another ECAC East opponent, nationally ranked Babson (10th USCHO, 11th D3H).

Kangas' kids open up the new year at the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Bank Classic hosted by the Norwich cadets. They play MASCAC opponent Plymouth State, who was projected to finish 20th in the country by D3H, but has started the season off at 1-3-0. They then play either the Milwaukee School of Engineering or Norwich on the second day.

The Lord Jeffs complete OOC play in late January with a rare NESCAC trip out west to face North Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) foes Concordia College (59th D3H) in Wisconsin and Lake Forest College (48th D3H) in Illinois. The Lord Jeffs last traveled out west a decade ago, when they defeated St. Thomas and tied Gustavus Adolphus in Minnesota in January of 2004.

Song for the season While questions remain to be answered for the Jeffs (and all teams for that matter) and the predictions for their finish vary, ultimately it will come down to the play on the ice.
