The Jumbos had NESCAC playoff aspirations after 2011-12 saw their first home NESCAC playoff game. But inconsistent lineups and replacing 2012 Second Team All-NESCAC goalie Scott Barchard proved to be too much, and the Jumbos finished dead last in the league.

The Continentals finished eighth in the NESCAC for the second straight season under coach Rob Haberbusch, who took over in 2011 when back-to-back NESCAC Coach of the Year Norm Bazin left for D-I UMass-Lowell. The season was marked by injuries and poor offensive production, especially on the power play. The Conts, winners (losers?) of our worst jersey in the NESCAC poll, did get surprised with cool new road unis before their NESCAC Quarterfinal match-up against eventual champion Bowdoin. The Conts took a 3-2 lead into the third period, but could not hold on, ultimately losing 5-3.

After a sweep of Tufts in early February, Conn College sat in seventh place and in the driver's seat for a NESCAC playoff spot. The Camels then lost their final four games to end up in ninth and on the outside looking in at the NESCAC playoffs for the fourth straight year. In the regular season finale, the Camels took conference champion Bowdoin to OT. Needing a win to make the NESCAC playoffs, CC pulled their goalie and lost on an empty-net OT goal. Not much was expected of first year head coach Blaise MacDonald and his Colby squad last year and through most of the season, not much was achieved. But then the Mules went 4-1-1 in their last six conference games and climbed out from the cellar and into the playoffs as the seventh seed. They lost to Williams 2-1 in the NESCAC Quarterfinals, but gave the Ephs all they could handle.

After finishing first in the NESCAC regular season and ranked in the top 10 in national polls, the Polar Bears needed a third period comeback to defeat Hamilton 5-3 in the NESCAC Quarterfinals. NESCAC championship weekend host Bowdoin then took care of business to win the NESCAC title, defeating Middlebury 4-2 in the semifinals and holding on to beat second seed Williams 2-1 in the final.  It was the school's first official NESCAC men's hockey title, as the 2011 win was controversially vacated by the administration after a hazing incident.  The NESCAC championship earned the Polar Bears an automatic bid in to the 11 team NCAA tournament.

In the first round of the NCAA tournament, Bowdoin soundly defeated Massachussetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) champion UMass-Dartmouth 5-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.  In the midst of midterms, Bowdoin traveled to upstate New York to play Utica College at the historic "Aud" . Bowdoin took a 2-1 lead into the third period, but Utica ultimately won 4-2 to deny the Polar Bears the school's first ever trip to the D-III Frozen Four.
