The Jumbos had NESCAC playoff aspirations after 2011-12 saw their first home NESCAC playoff game. But inconsistent lineups and replacing 2012 Second Team All-NESCAC goalie Scott Barchard proved to be too much, and the Jumbos finished dead last in the league.

The Jumbos are one of the more experienced returning teams in the 'Cac, though that is not necessarily a good thing for a last place team. One of the problems the Jumbos had in developing as a team last year was staying on the ice. With 280 penalty minutes in conference games, the Jumbos led the league.  Nick Metclafe and Jared Barker, two of the three departing seniors, were two of the top four offenders.

Jumbos leading scorer Gallegos tied Barker for the team lead in conference PIM. If he can keep the penalty minutes down and avoid the injuries that caused him to miss four games last year, it would go along way to helping the Jumbos make a push for a NESCAC playoff spot. Standout freshman Stewart Bell will also need to develop quickly ijn order to give the Jumbos a chance.

The biggest concern for the Jumbos lies on the defensive end after giving up  4.78 goals per game in conference play, almost a full goal more than the next team, Colby, who gave up 3.83 goals per game. The defensive corps will need to keep the shots lower than the 37.3 shots per game they allowed last year, and the goalie, be it returning starter Brian Phillps or newcomer Ryan Kellenberger, will need to perform better in net.

Predictions/Projections Everyone (USCHO, D3Hockey.com, our preseason poll, WordPress Blog) has the Jumbos finishing last in the NESCAC standings. The non-living prognosticators are a bit nicer, with D3Hockey.com(D3H)'s computer projections putting the Jumbos at 51st out of 79 teams in the final computer rankings, ahead of Hamilton at 56th. D3Hockey.com also picked Stewart Bell to be the breakout player of the year in the conference.

Out of Conference Schedule The Jumbos start off non-conference play against Becker (67th D3H) the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. They then travel to Vermont for the Rutland Invitational against Castelton (27th D3H), then either Brockport (5rd D3H) or Manhattanville (24th D3H) the next day. They then start the New Year in the Bostoncentric Codfish Bowl hosted by UMass-Boston. The Jumbos play Southern New Hampshire (73rd D3H) in the first round, then either Suffolk(62nd D3H) or UMB (14th D3H). Tufts completes its OOC schedule at home against Suffolk (potentially again) on January 8th.

Song for the season Though naysayers predict failure for the Jumbos, only the games will decide which side of the NESCAC playoff picture Tufts will fall on. Here's Boston band The Dropkick Murphys' "Which Side Are You on"
