Non-Conference Roundup 11/1913: USM at Colby

University of Southern Maine Huskies (2-3-0)        2
Colby College Mules (1-1-1; 0-1-1)                                5

It was over when...: Colby forward Robert McCormick (F, '16)  scored the fifth Mules goal of the game with 2:22 remaining to put the home team up by three. Five different Colby players scored, including Mules freshman Colin Reilly (F, '17) with his first collegiate goal. Despite the score, USM outshot Colby 43-26 and Mules goaltender Sam Parker (G, '15) made 41 saves in the victory.

USM opened up the scoring in the first on a Stephen Gallo (F, '15) tally at 7:34. Colby would answer back with a goal less than a minute half later when Tyler Lingel (F, '16) scored his first goal of the season. Colby freshman EJ Rauseo (F, '17) and Devil Alpert (F, '17) each got their first collegiate point on the play with an assist.

The first period saw no penalties but things got rough in the second with a total of eight penalties, four on each side. No power play goals were scored, but Colby defender Brendan Cosgrove (D, '14) did score a shorthanded goal on an assist from Ben Chwick (F, '14). Reilly added what proved to be the game winner to put the Mules up 3-1 heading into the third period.

The third period would see six more penalties with each side scoring on the PP. Colby's Ray Zeek (F,'15) scored his team high third goal while USM's Cole Klippenstein (D, '17) also scored his team high third goal on the PP for USM. McCormick would add the dagger later in the period.

This was the first win of the season for Colby and their first home game. The Mules bounced back from Sunday's 7-1 trouncing at the hands of the Middlebury Panthers, but gave up seven power plays to the Huskies. In three games, the Mules have given up 19 power play opportunities to opponents and have been outshot 126-72. Part of this may have to do with young, developing defenseman. Besides seniors Cosgrove (D, '14) and Nick Trepp (D, '14), the defensive corps had a total collegiate experience of six games heading into the season, courtesy of sophomore Jonathan Sdao (D, '16) and Middlebury transfer Alex Walsh (D, '16). Walsh had three penalties this evening.

Colby now heads into rivalry weekend with a home-and-home with interstate, interconference rival Bowdoin. The Mules will want to fix some of the defensive problems as the defending NESCAC champion Polar Bears will be hungry after a disappointing  (0-1-1) weekend to start the season.

Player of the Game: Colin Reilly (F, '17) Not only was it the Pelham, NY native's first collegiate goal, it turned out to be the game winner.  Goalie Sam Parker (G '15) was certainly deserving as well.
