Lowdown: Out of conference, In stateColby opens up their home schedule with out-of-conference but in-state rival Southern Maine. The Huskies play in Gorham, ME, an hour and a half south of Colby via I-295/I-95 and they are coached by Jeff Beaney, brother of Middlebury head coach Bill Beaney. USM is 2-2-0 on the young season and the Huskies were picked to finish eighth out of ten teams in the ECAC East by the conference coaches.
The Mules come in to the game after an 0-1-1 opening weekend, which saw them earn a hard fought 1-1 tie in the 2013 NESCAC Quarterfinal rematch at conference foe Williams and lose in a 7-1 blowout on Sunday at Middlebury. It's a short turnaround for Coach Blaise MacDonald's team, as they had to travel the five hours back to their Waterville, ME campus after the Sunday late afternoon game in Vermont.
The Huskies swept last season's home-and-home with a 3-2 OT win at home in Gorham in November and a 5-3 victory at Colby in early January. The game in Waterville was tied 3-3 in the third, before a power play goal halfway through the final frame and an empty net goal sealed it for USM. The Mules last beat the Huskies in November of 2012 with current Mules Nate Morgan (F, '15), Ben Chwick (F, '14) and Jack Bartlett (F, '14) adding three of the tallies in the 7-4 win at Colby.
USCHO's Tim Costello predicted a 4-3 Colby win and on the USCHO fan forum NESCAC Pick'em Thread, nine posters chose Colby while four chose Southern Maine.
Players to watch (provided you could watch)
Alex Pompao (D, '16) The Hingham, MA native led the Huskies in scoring last season with 19 points (8-11-19), including three against Colby (1-2-3). Pompao has three points (0-3-3) in four games this season.
Ray Zeek (F, '15) The junior from Wallingford, CT's two goals were the only tallies for the Mules over the weekend. Zeek has two points (0-2-2) in four career games against the Huskies.
In honor of this Pine Tree State rivalry, here's a live song from the Maine based Rustic Overtones with University of Southern Maine dropout Spencer Albee on keys. The show is in Lewiston, ME, the site of the 2014 NCAA D-III men's ice hockey Final Four. Features lead singer saying that being from Maine is nothing to be ashamed of and Albee calling out crowd-surfers at the end of the song.
