Tufts posts 2013-14 roster

Can Tyler Voigt ('16) and his mustache
help the Jumbos make the NESCAC playoffs?
The Tufts University Jumbos have released their roster for 2013-14. The 28 man roster is comprised of 22 returners and six freshman. Three veterans did not return this year: Derek Metcalfe (G, '16) Conor Helfrich (F, '16) and David Carson (D, '14).  Metcalfe, the brother of former Tufts captain Nick Metcalfe, played parts of seven games in net for the Jumbos last year, garnering the best win percentage (.400) of all three netminders with a 2-3-0 record. Helfrich scored one goal in his eight appearances and David Carson had three assists in 15 games.

The Jumbos lost 2012-13 co-captains  Dylan Plimmer (F, '13) and Nick Metcalfe (D, '13). Plimmer led the low scoring Jumbos (2.56 goals per game in league games, 8th in the NESCAC) in points (8-14-22) and Metcalfe provided a physical defensive presence, but Tufts only lost one other player to the work force. Leading goal scorer Kyle Gallegos (F, '14) returns as well as sophomore Stewart Bell (F, '16), who was second on the team in points (9-11-20) and one of the leading goal scorers among 'Cac rookies last year.

Senior Cody Armstrong (F, '14) and junior Blake Edwards (D, '15), the highest scoring Jumbo blueliner from last year, will captain the team.

Of the five skater recruits for the Jumbos, four are listed as forwards while the lone defenseman, EJHL product Sean Kavanagh (D, '17), is a two way player that can play on either side of the blueline. The Jumbos will need contributions from freshman like Kavanagh and powerful Salisbury PG Matt Pugh , if they hope to make the NESCAC playoffs. A year removed from their first home NESCAC playoff game in 2012, the Jumbos finished last in the 'Cac last season at 2-14-2 (7-15-2 overall).

But a bigger problem than offense was defense last season, as the Jumbos gave up 4.78 goals per game in conference play, almost a full goal more than the next team, Colby, who gave up 3.83 goals per game. If height is any indication of success in net, then Tufts is set.  The Jumbos have a goalie trio of returning starter Brian Phillips (G, '14)  (6'6"), senior backup Greg Jenkins (G, '14) (6'4") and freshman Ryan Kellenberger (G, '17) (6'3") from the NAHL.
