Conference Roundup 1/17/14

Hamilton Contintenals 4-7-1 (3-5-1 NESCAC)   3
Tufts Jumbos 3-10-0 (1-6-0 NESCAC)                 2      OT

It was over when...: Evan Haney (F,  '14) took it down the right wing and followed his own shot for a rebound goal with 33 ticks remaining in OT to give the visiting Continentals the victory. Hamilton is now 1-1-1 in the extra session while Tufts is 0-2. The Jumbos also move to 0-5 at home on the season with three of those home losses coming in conference games.

Hamilton had the better scoring chances in the first, though the scoreboard read 1-0 Tufts and the shots were even at 11 after the first frame. Senior Brendan Fadden (F, '14) scored his third goal of the season (and his career) from the slot at 19:31 on Keith Campbell (F, '1)'s team leading seventh assist. The Jumbos killed off a 5-3 in the first and stopped five of six Hamilton power plays on the evening. Hamilton, the most penalized team in the NESCAC, only went to the box twice on the evening and held the Jumbo power play to 0/2.

The only special teams goal of the evening  came at 7:15 of the second on Pat Curtis (F, '15)'s third tally of the season to give Hamilton a 2-1 lead. Assists went to Conor Lamberti (D, '17) and Mike Dimare (F, '14). It was Dimare's second assist of the night as the senior set up Kenny Matheson (F, '16) for the 1-1 equalizer just thirteen seconds into the second. Dimare now has 23 points for the season (8-15-23) in 12 games, a 1.92 points per game clip that is good enough for third in the country behind Trinity's JAckson Brewer (2.15) and Mike Hawkrigg (2.08).

The Jumbos scored in the final minute of the second period, just as they did in the first, to tie the game and ultimately force OT. Kyle Gallegos (F, '14) scored an unassisted goal with 26 seconds left in the second for his team leading seventh tally.

The matchup in net featured a pair of freshman goaltenders. Charlie Fennell (G, '17), starting in place of the injured Joe Quattrrocchi (G, '14), made 28 saves to improve to 2-3-0 on the season. Tufts Ryan Kellenberger, who has played far more than rookie minutes in goal, made 34 saves but fell to 2-10-0 on the season.

Player of the Game: Evan Haney (F, '14) The senior from Sainte-Marthe Quebec only had one point, but it was a big point. It is Haney's fourth game winning goal of his career and leaves his career stat line at a nice even 28 (14-14-28).

Colby Mules 8-4-3 (5-3-1 NESCAC)               5
Wesleyan Cardinals 7-5-1 (2-5-0 NESCAC)    4   OT

It was over when...: Nick Lanza (F, '14) scored his second goal of the game, unassisted, at 3:31 of the OT to lift the Mules to their third straight win, all in conference games. The loss is the first at home this season for the Cardinals and it is the third straight game and fifth straight conference game the Cards have lost.

Colby never lead in the game until winning in OT. Wesleyan had leads of 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 and 4-2, with the Cardinals last goal coming on a short handed goal at 14:29 of the third by James Kline (F, '17). Kline is second on the team in points with 16 (7-9-16) behind fellow freshman Elliot Vorel with 23 (11-12-23). Vorel was held pointless for the second straight games after an 11-game points streak to start his college career.

Things looked bleak for the Mules as Mike Van Siclen (F, Fr.) went to the box with 3:03 remaining and Colby down 4-2. But then Robert McCormick (F, '15) scored a short handed goal at 18:17 and Lanza tied the game with 10 seconds remaining. It was an odd game for special teams, as only two penalties were called and both special teams goals were short handed.

Dawson Sprigings (G, '17) made 24 saves to fall to 4-4-1 on the season, while Sam Parker stopped 21 shots to improve to 7-4-1 for the season.

Player of the game: Nick Lanza (F, '14) had three points (2-1-3), including the game tying goal in the final ten seconds and the winning goal in OT. The senior from Rocky Hill, CT is tied for the team lead in goals (10) and points (10-9-19).

Box Score: Colby 5/Wesleyan 4  OT

Amherst Lord Jeffs 8-5-0 (6-3-0 NESCAC)         4
Conn College Camels 2-10-1 (1-6-0 NESCAC)     2

It was over when... Aaron Deutsch (D, '15) had his third point of the evening with a goal just 1:41 into the second after two first period assists, to put the visiting Lord Jeffs up 3-0. The win snaps a three game losing streak for Amherst and keeps Conn College tied with Tufts for last place in the NESCAC.

The Camels outshot the Lord Jeffs, 27-23, thanks in part to seven Conn College power play opportunities. The host Camels only went 1/7 on the man advantage, while Amherst went 1/5 in their opportunities with the extra skater. Dave Cunningham (G, '16) made 25 saves to improve to 6-5-0 while Tom Conlin (G, '16) stopped 19 pucks to fall to 1-6-0.

Player of the game: Aaron Deutsch (D, '15) The junior out of Milton Academy had his first three point game of his college career to end the night leading the low scoring Lord Jeffs in assists (8) and points (4-8-12). He is tied for his career high goals in season and is one tally away from tying for the team lead of five goals.

Bowdoin Polar Bears 8-4-2 (4-4-1 NESCAC)      1
Trinity Bantams 10-3-0 (5-2-0 NESCAC)          5

It was over when...: Trinity scored a goal each in the second and third periods to extend their 3-1 lead after one period of play. The Bantams win extends their indoor winning streak to five and drops Bowdoin to 0-2-1 in games played outside of Maine.

Five different Bantams scored for the top offensive team in the NESCAC. Trinity entered the season with some questions on the offensive end after losing the law-firm line of Menard-Menard-So, but those fears have been to put to rest so far this season. The continued development of Jackson Brewer  (F, '15) and Mike Hawkrigg (F, '16), combined with rookies Sean Orlando (F, '17) and Ryan Cole (F, '17) have provided the Bantams with four twenty point scorers to date. All four scored against Bowdoin.

Bowdoin played its tenth straight game without Ollie Koo (D/F, '14). Gabe Renaud (D, '16), playing in his first game since a December 7th, assisted on Matt Rubinoff (F, '16)'s goal for the only Bowdoin tally of the night.

Trinity went 2/5 on the power play while Bowdoin went 0/3 on man advantage opportunities. The Polar Bears held the shot edge, 35-32, but Ben Coulthard (G, '14) was up to the task, stopping 34 shots to improve to 7-2-0 on the season. Steve Messina (G, '14) made 27 saves to fall to 5-3-0 on the season. Max Fenkell (G, '15) had been starting the front end of the goalie rotation, but coach Terry Meagher has been known to switch things up this season Expect Fenkell on Saturday against Wesleyan.

Player of the game: Jackson Brewer (F, '15) The Newton, MA native had a goal and two assists (1-2-3) to end the night with the second most points in D-III (7-11-18).
