The Canadian women came from behind to beat the US in OT in the gold medal game, then the Canadian men beat the US men 1-0 in the Olympic semis today. But I'm not bitter, I swear.
Bowdoin 14-7-2 (9-7-1 NESCAC) 5
Conn College 8-13-2 (7-9-1 NESCAC) 1
Box Score
Colin Downey scored his conference leading 19th goal of the season and freshman Kendall Culbertson had his first career multi-goal game en route to an easy road win for the Polar Bears. All five Bowdoin goals were scored by Americans while Conn College's lone goal came from Canadian Zach Shaprio, who nets his first collegiate goal in his third season as a Camel.
The win puts Bowdoin one point away from clinching the fourth and final home playoff seed in the NESCAC. The Polar Bears close out the regular season at last place Tufts on Saturday. For Conn College, they have been eliminated from home playoff game contention. They finish up the regular season tomorrow against Colby with their final seeding still up in the air.
Colby 11-9-3 (8-8-1 NESCAC) 4
Tufts 3-19-1 (1-15-1 NESCAC) 1
Box Score
Ben Chwick scored his second goal of the game and team leading 16th tally on a rare penalty shot in the third period to break open a one goal game in the third. Chwick represented the USA this past summer at the Maccabiah Games, where he and team USA lost to Canada in the gold medal game. All five goals in tonight's contest were scored by Americans.
If Colby defeats Conn College tomorrow Middlebury will have to earn at least three points in their two games against Amherst and Hamilton to earn the fifth spot. Tufts closes their season at home against Bowdoin tomrrow as the Jumbos have been eliminated from playoff contention since before last weekend.
A Colby/Bowdoin playoff matchup would be much anticipated in the Pine Tree State. The bitter in-state rivals last met in the 2011 NESCAC seminfinals hosted by Williams. The fifth seed Polar Bears beat the sixth seed Mules, 3-1, before going on to upset the second seed Ephs in the championship, a title the school would later infamously and controversially vacate after a hazing scandal. In the semis, Downey had two assists and Steve Messina, who stopped 20 of 21 Camels shots tonight, made 23 saves in the victory. The last time the Mules and Polar Bears met at Sidney J Watson Arena, the likely location of this year's yet to be solidifed 4/5 matchup, Bowdoin won 2-1 in OT.
Wesleyan 11-10-2 (6-10-1 NESCAC) 0
Trinity 19-4-0 (14-3-0 NESCAC) 2
Box Score
Alaskan freshman Ryan Cole scored two third period goals (breakaway, empty netter), his 16th and 17th of the season, to break a 0-0 tie after two periods of play. Trinity outshot Wesleyan, 48-32, and Canadian freshman Dawson Sprigings stood on his head, stopping 46 of 47 Bantams shots to keep the Cardinals in it. Senior Ben Coulthard stopped 32 shots, including some crucial saves down the stretch, to earn a shutout on Senior Night in Hartford. The Bantams may be losing their All-NESCAC goaltender to graduation, but they will be returning 98 of their NESCAC leading 100 goals scored so far this season.
The Bantams sit just one point away from clinching home ice throughout the NESCAC playoffs. Wesleyan still sits three points ahead of Hamilton for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Bantams/Cardinals meet again tomorrow night in Middletown and are likely to meet for a third straight time back in Hartford next weekend in the 1/8 Quarterfinal matchup. The Bantams/Cardinals met in Hartford last year for the Quaterfinals as well in the 3/6 matchup with Trinity winning in OT on a dramatic Mike Hawkrigg (Canadian) wraparound goal.
