Non Conference Finals 11/29/14

With All ten teams in action, the 'Cac rebounded from their 0-3 Friday for a 7-3 Saturday to move to 10-6-0 against OOC opponents on the season.

Ryan McConnell (G, '18) turned aside 31 Spartan shots as Tufts defeated host Castelton in the consolation game of the Rutland Herald Invitational in Vermont. Brian Brown (F, '18) and Matt Pugh (F, '17) had two goals apiece, including Pugh's goal 12:50 into the third to break a 3-3 tie.

Colby opened their out-of-conference schedule in the familiar confines of Sidney Watson Arena in the opening day of the Colby/Bowdoin Faceoff Classic. Jordan Nathan (G, '15) made 32 saves for a win in his first start of the year and Devin Albert (F ,'17) scored two goals in the third to break open a 3-3 tie. Senior captain Ray Zeek (F, '15) scored a goal in his first game back since being injured in the season opener against Williams.

Topher Flanagan (F, '16) bookended the Lord Jeffs' scoring as Amherst outshot Elmira 34-18. Dave Cunningham (G,'16) made 14 saves for the victory.



Plattsburgh (8-1-0; 7-0-0 SUNYAC)       4

Jakes Charles (F, '16) and Vincent Gisonti (F, '18) scored third period goals but it was not enough to overcome a 4-0 deficit as the host Panthers dropped the consolation game of the 17th annual Primelink Great Northern Shootout. Stephen Klein (G, '18) made 35 saves to take the loss in his first collegiate start. On the other side, the #3 ranked Cardinals' Spencer Finney (G, '16) - D-I Colgate's starting netminder in 2012-13 before transferring to D-III last winter break - made 24 saves to improve to 5-0-0 on the season.

In the championship game, the Cobbers of Concordia (Minnesota) shocked #2 ranked Norwich in a shootout to become the first non core-three team (Middlebury, Plattsburgh, Norwich) to win the Primelink. The Cobbers defeated Middlebury 4-3 in the opening round.

Bowdoin scored six special teams goals (3 on the pp, 2 short handed) in the first two periods to roll to an easy victory on the opening day of the Colby/Bowdoin Faceoff Classic. Peter Cronin (G, '18) made 29 saves to improve to 2-0-1 on the season. The Polar Bears spread the love around with six different players netting a tally on the day. Colby and Bowdoin swap opponents at Colby on Sunday with Bowdoin playing Salve Regina and Colby taking on Wenworth.

Anthony Sabitsky (F, '18), Tyler Whitney (F, '18) and Conor Coveney (F, '15) each had two apiece as the Bantams peppered the Crossairs goaltenders with 70 shots en route to a blowout opening to their OOC schedule. Alex Morin (G, '18) made 21 saves for the victory in his collegiate debut. 13 different Bantams have already scored this season and they have scored 7+ goals  in four of their first five games. They'll face much stiffer competition when they take on nationally ranked UMASS-Boston on Sunday.

Coach Bill Kangas and his Ephs avenged last year's loss to his son Brett Kangas (D, '17)'s Johnson &Wales' squad. Freshman ruled the day as CJ Shugart (F, '18) scored two goals and David Italiano (F, '18) scored the game winner as Williams overcame a 3-1 deficit to advance to the finals of the Skidmore Tournament. Sean Dougherty (G, '15) made 23 saves to improve to 4-0-1 on the year. The Ephs take on Morrisville in the finals on Sunday.



UMass-Boston (7-0-0; 4-0-0 ECAC-E)     6
Wesleyan (1-4-0; 1-3-0 NESCAC)              2

The Beacons outshot the Cardinals 43-22 to cruise to a 6-2 victory at Wesleyan. UMAss-Boston faces off against fellow nationally ranked/undefeated Trinity on Sunday while Wesleyan gets a crack at UMass-Dartmouth.

Robbie Murden (F, '17) netted a hat trick for his first three goals of the season and Charlie Fennel (G, '17) made 24 saves in his first start of the year. The first line accounted for all five goals as Pat Curtis (F, '15) and Kenny Matheson (F, '16) also netted tallies.

Dylan Wells (G, '15) played better than he did against Hamilton on Friday, making 32 saves to earn Utica's second straight victory over a NESCAC opponent. The Pioneers gave up six power plays to the Camels, but Conn could only capitalize on one of their man advantage opportunities. 

The NESCAC avenged the wicked 0-3 OOC mark on Friday seven times for a 7-3 record on Saturday. Here's Avenged Sevenfold's "The Wicked End"
