Conference Roundup 1/6/17

Colby (5-3-1; 4-2-1 NESCAC)              1
Hamilton (9-0-2; 4-0-2 NESCAC)       2

Hamilton senior Robbie Murden scored 5:32 into the second period after a scrum in front of the net for what proved to be the last goal of the game. New Colby goaltender Sean Lawrence, who transferred form D1 Quinnipiac mid-season and was making his D3 debut, wanted an interference call from the boys in black and white but his pleadings fell on deaf ears. Lawrence, still clad in the navy and gold pads/helmets of QU, made 24 saves for the loss in his first collegiate action since November 2015 during his freshman year with the Bobcats under Rand Pecknold, a Conn College alum.

The Mules kicked off the scoring with an unassisted tally from Phil Klitirinos that trickled past Evan Buitenhuis just 2:14 into the 1st. It was just the second time this season that Hamilton trailed in the game and the first time since a 1-0 lead for Amherst in the season opener at Sage. Last night, the Conts were playing at Sage for the first time in 45 days while Colby was playing for the first time at all in almost a month.

Hamilton drew even just ten minutes later when Neil Conway pounded home a rebound on the power play. The Conts went 1/5 while Colby squandered their six power play opportunities, including a brief five-on-three in the third that was quickly shortened on a controversial interference call on EJ Rauseo. Buitenhuis made 30 saves to move to a .963 save %, first in NCAA DIII men's ice hockey.

Colby travels to Amherst on Saturday while the Continentals welcome the Polar Bears of Bowdoin.

Middlebury (0-10-1; 0-7-0 NESCAC)    2
Wesleyan (7-3-0; 3-2-0 NESCAC)        3

Middlebury fought back from a 3-0 hole with two goals in the second but the Panthers were unable to net the equalizer in the final frame. The loss drops the Panthers to double-digit losses for the seventh straight season. Prior to that, the Panthers went 17 straight seasons (1994-2011) with single digit losses. On the flip side, Wesleyan has more wins this season than in the last two seasons combined (5-35-8).

The victorious Cardinals welcome the Ephs on Saturday while Middlebury has the tall taks of trying to earn their first win of the season against a Trinity team that is starting to build momentum.

Bowdoin (6-5-0; 3-4-0 NESCAC)        3
Amherst (6-3-1; 2-3-1 NESCAC)       7

The first five minutes of the game for the Polar Bears? Great, they scored twice. The rest of the game? Well, it wasn't as bad as the collapse in the NESCAC Quarterfinals last season, but it did include four unanswered goals by the Purple and White (who have narrowed their search for a new mascot to 30 candidates, including Fighting Poets and Dinosaur) in the second period. Junior Thomas Lindstrom had two goals and frosh Pat Daly added a tally to both end the night with the team in goals at eight. Peter Cronin was in net for all seven goals and made 22 saves to fall to 2-5-0 on the season while Adam Ellison stopped 20 pucks to improve to 3-0-0.   The Polar Bears try to salvage the weekend in Clinton, NY on Saturday while the P&W welcome Colby and their new goalie into town.

Williams (4-4-2; 3-2-2 NESCAC)      0
Trinity  (7-3-1;3-2-0 NESCAC)        3

Junior Alex Morin made 23 saves in front of one roudy, audible child and 149 other people in Hartford to earn his first career shutout. On the other end of the ice, Anthony Sabitsky added his team leading seventh and eighth goals of the season. Trinity, after a pedestrian 3-3 start is 4-0-1 (exluding the exhibition loss to the US U18s) in their last five games, including a win over fourth ranked Adrian. The Ephs are 1-2-1 in their last four, but that stretch includes games against Trinity and Hamilton, top 5 ranked Norwich and a win against then top ranked Oswego.   The Ephs look to right the ship in the Nutmeg State against Wesleyan on Saturday while Trinity looks to blast winless Middlebury.
