Conference Roundup 1/18/13

Thanks to Benet Pols for the Williams/Bowdoin recap.

Bowdoin College Polar Bears (14-1-1;9-1-1)         4
Williams College Ephs (8-4-2;6-2-1)                          1

It was over when...: Bowdoin scored on a quick three-on-one break 16 seconds into the third period after capitalizing on some sloppy blue line play by Williams. The Polar Bears 4-1 lead came off Harry Mattheson(F, Jr.)'s marker after some fine passing.

The Ephs had the best of play in the scoreless first period testing Steve Messina (G, Jr.) several times.  Both teams failed to take advantage of 5-3 power plays.

Bowdoin tallied first in the second period when John McGinnis (F, So.) placed a deft backhand shot up top after lulling Williams to sleep. Williams was back in it quickly after taking advantage of a Bowdoin miscue at center ice with Ephs leading scorer Peter Mistretta (F, So.) converting a pretty 3 on 1 break on a pass from Evan Dugdale (F, Sr.). The tie was short lived though as an own goal caromed off the chest of a Williams defender.  The Ephs, deflated the remainder of the period, let Bowdoin press its advantage.  The Polar Bears went up 3-1 on a methodical play when Rob Toczylowski (F, Sr.) drew the defense and put the puck across the front of the net to a wide open Ollie Koo (D/F, Jr.).  Koo now leads Bowdoin with 11 goals.

Williams outshot Bowdoin 36-26 and both teams went 0-4 on the power play. Sean Dougherty (G, So.) let up more than three goals for only the second time this year and for the second game in a row(he didn't play against Babson).

Player of the game: Steven Messina  (G, Jr.) for his 35 saves and holding Williams scoreless in a tough first period.  He also came up big several times in the middle of the third as Williams put together a nice little stretch before running out of time and gas.

Connecticut College Camels (4-7-3; 1-5-3)              2
Wesleyan University Cardinals (7-6-1; 3-4-1)     7

It was over when...: John Guay  (F, Sr.) scored about 8 minutes into the second period to put the Cardinals up 5-0 and they coasted the rest of the way. Seven different Cardinals scored, including Alex Carlacci (F, Fr.) and Connor Ryan (F, So..) getting their first collegiate goals.

Stever Servideo (F, Jr.) scored his first goal of the season in the Camels loss. Tom Conlin (G, Fr.) replaced Camel goalie Mike Petchonka (G, Jr.) in the second, and gave up 3 goals in relief. Wesleyan out shot Conn College 28-17.

Colby held tough on the road, bringing a 3-3 tie into the third, but Chris Brown (F, Sr.) scored his first goal of the year to break the tie and put the Panthers up 4-3. Shots in favor of Middlebury 38-21.

Player of the game: Chris Brown (F, Sr.) for his two point night (1-1-2), including what turned out to be the game winner.

Chris Menard (F, Sr.) scored two of the third period goals and assisted on a third (1-2-3). Nathaniel Heilbron (G, Fr.) replaced  an injured Benjamin Coulthard  (G, Jr.) in the first en route to 21 saves and his first collegiate win. Neither team scored on the power play and Trinity outshot Tufts 42-27.

Player of the game:  Chris Menard  (F, Sr.) for his 3  third period points (2-1-3) to break open the game for the Bantams.
