Ollie Koo (#25) and Bowdoin look to repeat as NESCAC champs |
The only non-returner is Georgia's own Dylan Shamburger (F, '16), who led the novice Polar Bear forwards last year with six points (3-3-6), including a goal in the first round NCAA Tournament game against U-Mass Dartmouth. Not sure what happened to Shamburger, but as Benet Pols points out, his jersey number (24) has not been assigned to anyone else. We'll let you know when we learn more.
Up front, the most potent offensive attack in the NESCAC from 2012-13 at 4.22 goals per game in conference play returns four of their five top scorers. Bowdoin lost First Team All-NESCAC forward and leading goal scorer Dan Weiniger (F, '13), but return Second Team All-NESCAC hybrid player and leading point scorer Ollie Koo (D/F, '14), as well as Jon McGinnis (F, '15) and Harry Matheson (F, '14). Coach Terry Meagher is a fan of fast skaters and he added some in a recruiting class that includes Zak Kokosa (F, '17) from Illinois and Kendall Culbertson (F, '17) from SoCal.
On the blueline, Bowdoin lost first Team All-NESCAC defenseman/co-captain/Polar Bears all-time penalty minutes accumulator Tim McGarry (D, '13) as well as solid d-man Al Milley (D, '13). The returning corp includes Gabriel Renaud (D, '16), who developed nicely in his first season of collegiate hockey, and senior Jay Livermore (D, '14). Livermore will co-captain the team with Matheson.
Six of the nine recruits are blueliners with various styles of play and from different hockey backgrounds. From Canadia juniors by way of prep school , the Polar Bears bring in stay at home d-man John Kourkoulis (D, '17) the godson of NHL Hall of Famer Chris Chelios and former draft pick of the QMJHL's now defunct Lewiston Maineiacs, who played their home games at the Adnroscoggin Bank Colisee, site of the 2014 NCAA D-III Frozen Four that Bowdoin will be hosting. American juniors brings the offensive mindset of Brendan Conroy (D, '17) and prep school brings the playmaking skills of Mitch Barrington (D. '17) and the size of Joe Lace (D, '17).
During the 2012-13 NESCAC playoffs and NCAA tournament, much was made of the Polar Bears goalie rotation and the info that Coach Meagher includes the input of a player leadership council in his netminder decision. Meagher will have the same dilemma this year, as both Steve Messina (G, '14)and Max Fenkell (G, '15) return to Brunswick. Two solid goaltenders with different styles of play? It's not a bad problem to have.
