The NESCAC has announced its all conference teams. Wesleyan's Keith Buehler (F, Jr.) takes home player of the year honors as voted on by the conference coaches. Four schools represent the first team and eight schools represent at least one of the two teams. Only Conn. College and Tufts have no players on the list.
For the full list, including Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year see the chart below (taken from NESCAC's official release) and for the full-write up, check out the NESCAC's full release.

Can I swim, too? NESCAC chances for a Pool C bid in the NCAA D-III men's ice hockey tournament
Benet Pols examines the NESCAC's chances at putting a second team in the NCAA Tournament; includes an overview of the selection process, a detailed look at the case for each of the four 'CAC schools, an examination of the odds for the rest of the country and what happens behind closed doors in smoke filled rooms on Selection Sunday...

With the NESCAC men’s ice hockey Champion set to be crowned
sometime Sunday afternoon at Bowdoin College’s Sidney J. Watson Arena in
Brunswick, ME, it’s a good time to examine the prospects for a second NESCAC
team's inclusion in the NCAA tournament. On Saturday March 2, 2013 at 1:00 PM the
second seeded Ephs of Williams take on third seeded Trinity College Bantams. First place
Bowdoin faces off against the 5th seed, and Bowdoin’s playoff bĂȘte
noire, Middlebury at 4:00. The winners will face-off on Sunday for the Championship
with the winner, as most fans know, advancing to the NCAA tourney via the conference’s automatic qualifier (AQ).

"The Sid" will be packed this weekend |
But what happens to the runner up? Many have been assuming
that Bowdoin, by virtue of its (20-3-2) record so far is a lock for a so called
Pool-C, or at-large, bid should they fail to win the NESCAC championship.
Not so fast Polar Bear Nation, or Ephs fans, or Bantam backers. Your road to Lake Placid almost certainly requires your team to be
hoisting hardware this Sunday afternoon at the Sid. For each of the three top
teams there’s a slim chance of getting one of the three Pool-C spots, but
because of the intense competition for these spots from other conferences,
particularly the ECAC-West, ECAC-East and the SUNYAC, chances of getting a
pool-C bid are especially bad this year.
And Middlebury fans? You’re not forgotten, but your only shot at the NCAA tournament is by
winning the NESCAC championship this weekend. Better bring your A game Panther Nation.
With news that Bowdoin will be the host school for the 2014 NCAA Div. III
Frozen Four, to be held at the Colisee in Lewiston, the byzantine process of
putting together the tournament field will be of even greater interest to not
just the NESCAC colleges, but all the other New England conferences.

Student Newspapers
The Amherst Student chronicles the Lord Jeffs "gut-wrenching" end to their conference title defense, Saturday's 4-3 loss at home to Middlebury in the NESCAC Quarterfinals. The quote from Jack Arena sums it up. "When a season ends there are no moral victories...the guys were devasatated." Full article
The Wesleyan Argus covers the last game as a Cardinal for Wesleyan's 10 seniors, a "Route Nine Rivalry" OT loss to Trinity in the Quarterfinals. Full article
The Williams Record has a piece on the Ephs 2-1 victory over Colby in the Quarters to send them to Bowdoin for a semifinal showdown with Trinity. Coach Bill Kangas channels Reinhold Niebuhr when talking about the semis. "They(Trinity) beat us last time in the year. They have a very good hockey team. We'll be ready to play and hopefully at out best. All we can control is ourselves." Full Article
This is from a few weeks ago and we've talked about him before, but The Bowdoin Orient has a feature on Jon Landry that includes quotes from the NHL hopeful himself. Full Article
This op-ed from The Middlebury Campus isn't about hockey directly, but addresses the "Fanhood Problem" at Middlebury. Using the ski team's only home race of the season as a springboard, the piece examines what the writer feels is a "woefully negligent job promoting its athletics" by the college. We would be interested to hear what Middlebury hockey players/fans feel about this topic. Full Article

The NCAA has released its third installment of the regional ranking, used to determine Pool C "at-large" bids as well as seeding, for the NCAA Division III men's ice hockey tournament. This will be the final public rankings before the selection of the tournament field this Sunday, March 3rd. The full regional rankings (includes the west) can be found here.
Norwich swaps spots with Utica to match the top ranking the Cadets have in the national polls. In the NESCAC, Bowdoin holds at 7, Williams slides back one spot to 8, Trinity holds at 9, Amherst plummets four spots to 14, and Middlebury drops a tick to 16. The Lord Jeffs significantly fall comes after their loss in the NESCAC Quarterfinals to the Panthers.

Wesleyan's Nick Craven to sign ATO Contract with AHL's Binghamton Senators
Wesleyan senior Co-Captain Nick Craven (F, Sr.) will sign an Amateur Tryout Contract with the American Hockey League (AHL)'s Binghamton Senators in the next few days, and is set to join the team next week. Craven became available to play for a professional team since the Cardinals season ended with a 5-4 overtime loss to Trinity in the NESCAC Quarterfinals this past Saturday.
The AHL is a 30 team professional hockey league that serves as the highest level of minor league hockey in North America. Since 2010-11, all 30 teams have had an affiliation with an NHL team. The Binghamton Senators, nicknamed the B-Sens, are the AHL affiliate for the NHL's Ottawa Senators and currently have a (31-17-1-4) record. Their 67 points puts them at second in the East Division behind the Syracuse Crunch (the Tampa Bay Lightning affiliate) and fourth in the Eastern Conference.
Amateur tryout contracts, or ATOs, are common towards the later part of the AHL season as collegiate players attempting to turn professional have their school's season end while the professional hockey season continues. Bowdoin's Jon Landry ('06) signed an ATO with the Portland Pirates of the AHL after finishing his college career with the Polar Bears and played two games for the Pirates before being released. Landry went on to play professionally in several other leagues before returning to the AHL. He is currently under contract with the New York Islanders of the NHL and plays with their AHL affiliate Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
Craven had a monster senior season for the Cardinals, tallying 33 points (16-17-33), good enough for 16th in the nation among D-III players and second in the NESCAC behind teammate Keith Buehler (F, Jr.). The 6'3" forward from Colorado handily won the NESCAC MVP poll we ran 2/3 of the way through the year, receiving 46% of the vote. Bowdoin's Harry Matheson (F, Jr.) was the next highest vote getter with 14%. In three previous seasons combined at Wesleyan, the Phillips Academy alum only had 29 points (13-16-29), making his senior campaign all the more impressive.
Congratulations to Nick on his accomplishment and all his hard work. We'll keep you posted on his progress with the Senators.

News and Notes 2/25/13: Bowdoin to host 2014 D3 Frozen Four, Trinity coach interview and more
Bowdoin to host 2014 Division-III Men's Hockey Frozen Four in Lewiston, ME
The National Collegiate Athletic Association has selected a bid from Bowdoin College to host the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey National Championship. It will be the first ever D-III men's hockey finals held in the state of Maine and only the second time Bowdoin has hosted an NCAA Championship, the first time being the 1989 Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
While Bowdoin is the host school, the host city will be Lewiston, ME, and the host venue will be the 3,667 seat Androscoggin Bank Colisee (pictured). Bowdoin's state of the art Sidney J. Watson Arena, first opened in 2009, cannot house the event because of its size. The Sid has a capacity of 2,400, but the NCAA has a minimum capacity requirement of 3,000 for championship sites.

NESCAC Quarterfinals: A weekend in tweets
In this era of advanced technology, the world is an ever inter-connected web of information. If only they had a world for it...hmm, any ideas?...no? Oh well. Further, this inter-connected web of information still looking for a name has produced many mediums for people to connect and be social....people should come up for a word or phrase for that, too.
Pre-game
In that spirit, we present to you the narrative of this weekend's NESCAC men's hockey quarterfinals as told by the world of twitter. Some tweets are from online hockey publications, others from school's athletic departments, some from fans and even some from the keyboards/ipads of players and coaches. We apologize for the player's names we misspelled in our tweets, it is hard to update fast and be accurate at the same time. Enjoy!

Something wasn't going right for the Bowdoin Polar Bears during the first two periods of their 5-3 NESCAC quarterfinal win against the Hamilton Continentals. Late in the second period, Hamilton's aggressive back-check and clutch-and-grab-play led no less a hockey observer than Bowdoin's President Barry Mills to note that the Cont's physical play was preventing Polar Bears swirling offense from hitting its stride.
Down 3-2 after two periods Coach Meagher needed a change. Junior Ollie Koo (D/F, Jr.), who has been the Polar Bears' hottest hand around the net this year (14-15-29), but had been playing defense for the last three games, was reunited up front with Harry Matheson (F, Jr.) and Colin Downey (F, Jr.). The Polar Bear's leading goal scorer for the regular season with 16, Senior Co-Capt. Daniel Weiniger (F, Sr.) joined smooth play maker John McGinnis (F, So) and speedster Connor Quinn (F, So). for the third period.

The Ephs finished fifth in the NESCAC in 2011-12 (12-9-5; 8-8-2), beating Tufts in OT in the first round of the playoffs but then losing to Amherst, 2-1, in the conference semi-finals. Citing uncertainty in net after graduating Ryan Purdy (G, '12) and a lack of roster depth , USCHO and the WordPress Blog both had the Ephs finishing seventh in the NESCAC.

Preseason Predictions
2011-2012 was a transition year for the Bantams, as young Trinity Alum Matt Greason ('03) took over the helms of the program after serving as an assistant coach for the US National Team Development Program. Greason led the Bantams to seventh in the NESCAC (9-13-2; 6-10-2), including a 2-1 loss to Bowdoin in the first round of the conference playoffs.
USCHO and The WordPress Blog predicted better days for the Greason led Bantams this year. Complimenting the Menard twins and Ben Coulthard (G, Jr.), Tim Costello of USCHO had them coming in fourth. The WordPress Blog was even more confident in Trinity, placing them at third and mentioning a strong recruiting class that included John Hawrigg (F, Fr.) .

Preseason Predictions
2011-12 was a hard act to follow for Amherst. The Lord Jeffs went (24-4-1; 17-1-0), winning the regular season NESCAC crown, winning the conference tournament, and making it all the way to the Frozen Four before losing to Oswego, 2-1, in OT. Still, USCHO and the WordPress Blog predicted success for Amherst this year, placing the Lord Jeff at second and first, respectively, in the league. Concerns included replacing reigning NESCAC and USCHO D-III Player of the Year Jonathan La Rose (G, '12) in net. Strengths included returning firepower, as eight of the top ten leading scorers came back for the 2012-13 season. National writers gave them love as well, ranking Amherst sixth in the first USCHO D-III National Poll, before the Lord Jeffs had even played a game.

Preseason Predictions
In a very streaky 2011-12 season, Middlebury finished third in the NESCAC (14-10-3; 11-6-1) and made it to the conference finals, where they lost to Amherst 4-3. Tim Costello of USCHO picked the Panthers to finish third, while the WordPress Blog had them finishing fourth. A strong incoming recruitment class was praised, but caution was offered as it remained to be seen how that talent would gel with the overall team. With a roster comprised of five goaltenders, competition was predicted for time in net.
Potential winter storm causes change to start time of NESCAC playoff games
Updated: Friday at 1 PM
Broadway brought us Avenue Q, a hilarious satire of The Muppets that laments the hardships of becoming an adult. The New York Metro Transit Authority (MTA) brought us the Q Subway Line, a useful track of public transit that runs from Coney Island in Brooklyn through Manhattan then out to the Astoria section of Queens.
Winter Storm Q is a different story. Neither as entertaining nor useful as its q brethren, storm Q is set to dump a bunch of ice and snow on the Midwest. "Why would a NESCAC fan care about a storm in the Midwest?" you retort. Well, a new low-pressure system associated with Winter Storm Q might bring significant snowfall to New England this weekend.
In preparation for this, Williams has moved the start time of its NESCAC Quarterfinal men's hockey game against Colby, originally scheduled for 3PM, up to 1 PM. Thanks to Colby assistant coach Chris Hall (@chall4431 on twitter) for the update.
FRIDAY UPDATE: According to the official twitter of Trinity Hockey (@TCBantamsHockey) the start time for the game between #6 Wesleyan at #3 Trinity, originally scheduled for 4 PM, has been moved up 1PM, due to weather concerns. All NESCAC quarterfinal are games now scheduled for 1PM.
So the up to date schedule is as follows:
#8. Hamilton at #1. Bowdoin 1 PM
#7. Colby at #2. Williams 1 PM
#6. Wesleyan at #3. Trinity 1 PM
#5. Middlebury at #4. Amherst 1PM
We will let you know if Q's low pressure friend causes any other changes to the schedule.
